The county town of Essex, Chelmsford lies upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, some 32 miles from central London. The town boasts a populace of about 111,000 people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The site of early Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, the town was subsequently the site of a Roman fortress in roughly 60 AD, and the community that developed round the fort was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon community succeeded the demise of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was noted as Celmeresfort, however 100 years later it had taken on its contemporary title of Chelmsford.

As early as the thirteenth century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and moreover became seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent many of the inhabitants of Chelmsford participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the leading instigators were consequently executed in Chelmsford after the uprising was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th C saw many more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and executed many presumed exponents of witchcraft.

Over the years a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford evolved into an important manufacturing town in the 19th C, producing such goods as steam engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products, traction engines and ballbearings. Its prominence in light industrial engineering caused it to be a target of bombing during World War 2, and it was struck several times.

The railway came to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five yrs before (1797), when it joined the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, helping watercraft to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford entered some decline during the 1980's, simply because a lot of its industries shut down, even so it is still a thriving and expanding town today, predominantly due to the proximity to the capital, plus its good road and rail connections.

The town sits adjacent to the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it is approximately twenty six km driving distance from Colchester and about thirty-two mls from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
