The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is found on the rivers Chelmer and Can, some 32 miles from central London. The town boasts a population of some one hundred and eleven thousand occupants, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

It is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The site of early Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, the town was subsequently the location of a Roman fortification in about the first century AD, and the commune that grew up round the fort was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . A Saxon settlement succeeded the downfall of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, however one hundred years later it had taken on its modern name of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th C, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and in addition became the seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century a number of the citizens of Chelmsford became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a number of the main culprits were subsequently put to death in Chelmsford after the uprising was ended by Richard II.

The 17th C witnessed even more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and hanged countless supposed witches.
