Its import in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a bombing target in WWII, and it was hit on a few occasions.

The train arrived in Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence for the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some 45 years before (1797), at which time it connected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, helping craft to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

The town entered a time of decline in the nineteen-eighties, when a lot of its industry shut down, nonetheless it continues to be a thriving and blooming town today, mostly because of its proximity to London, plus its superb road and rail links.
