Essex's county town, Chelmsford lies upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, some 32 miles from the centre of London. Chelmsford boasts a population of approximately one hundred and eleven thousand inhabitants, while the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

Chelmsford is an old town that was the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The location of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, the town was subsequently the location of a Roman fortress in roughly AD 60, and the village which expanded surrounding the fortification was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . An Anglo Saxon community came after the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, whilst by the year 1199 it was being referred to by its current title of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex plus became the seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century some of the inhabitants of the town were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a number of the main culprits were subsequently hung in Chelmsford after the uprising was ended by Richard II.

The 17th century witnessed yet more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and put to death numerous suspected exponents of witchcraft.

For several generations a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford became an important manufacturing town in the nineteenth century, producing such goods as ball bearings, agricultural machinery, traction engines, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its prominence in light industry resulted in its being a target for bombing in WW2, and it was struck many times.

The railway line arrived in the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity for the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did around 45 yrs earlier (1797), at which time it connected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, which made it possible for craft to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford entered serious decline in the 1980's, mainly because a lot of its industry closed, all the same it continues to be a flourishing and blooming town today, predominantly because of its closeness to London, and its exceptional road and rail communications.

The town sits beside the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it's approximately 16 miles car journey from Colchester and about 32 mls from the centre of London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
