Essex's county town, Chelmsford can be found upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, approximately thirty two mls from the centre of London. Chelmsford has a population of roughly 111,500 occupants, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

It is an ancient town which was the location of a Roman fort in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The site of early Bronze Age and Neolithic encampments, the town was subsequently the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD, and the encampment that developed in the vicinity of the fortification was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . A Saxon community followed after the decline of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, however 100 years later being called by its contemporary title of Chelmsford.

In the 13th Cent, it took on the title of county town of Essex and in addition became seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent many of the residents of Chelmsford took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a few of the leading agitators were consequently put to death in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the rebellion.

The 17th Cent witnessed many more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and executed many presumed exponents of witchcraft.

For many generations a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford became a substantial industrial town during the 19th Cent, manufacturing items such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its import in light industry led to its being a bombing target during WW2, and it was hit quite a few times.

The railway came to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity for the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five years earlier (1797), at which time it joined Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, letting ships to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went through a time of decline in the nineteen-eighties, when much of its industry closed down, even so it continues to be a successful and developing town today, mostly because of its closeness to the city of london, plus the superb rail and road communications.

Chelmsford is situated beside the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it is about twenty six km car journey from Colchester and about 51 kms from the centre of the capital. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
