Essex's county town, Chelmsford stands on the Chelmer and Can rivers, some thirty two miles from the city of London. The town has a population of about one hundred and eleven thousand people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

It is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin became a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The site of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, Chelmsford was later the site of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD, and the village which grew up surrounding the fortress was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . A Saxon settlement followed the end of the Romans in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was described as Celmeresfort, nevertheless one hundred years later it had become known by its modern name of Chelmsford.

In the 13th C, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and also became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th C some of the locals of the town took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the leading culprits were accordingly put to death in Chelmsford after the revolt was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th Cent saw even more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and hanged numerous presumed exponents of witchcraft.

Across the centuries a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford evolved in to a major manufacturing town in the 19th C, crafting such items as ball bearings, agricultural machinery, traction engines, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its importance in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a target of bombing in World War 2, and it was struck on several occasions.

The railway arrived in the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity to the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 years before (1797), when it interconnected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, encouraging watercraft to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town got into some decline during the nineteen-eighties, because a lot of its industrial facilities went bust, though it remains a flourishing and expanding town today, for the most part due to the closeness to the capital, and the good rail and road links.
