The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is found on the rivers Chelmer and Can, some thirty two miles from central London. The town has got a population of approximately 110,000 people, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The location of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, the town was subsequently the site of a Roman fort in about the first century AD, and the settlement which grew up round the fortification was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . A Saxon encampment superseded the decline of Roman control in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was described as Celmeresfort, although 100 years later it was being referred to by its contemporary identity of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th C, it became the county town of Essex and moreover became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th century many of the citizens of Chelmsford were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the leading instigators were thereafter hung in Chelmsford after the uprising was ended by Richard II.

The 17th century saw lots more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and put to death many presumed exponents of witchcraft.

Across the centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became a substantial manufacturing town during the 19th Cent, making goods such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its import in light industrial engineering led to its being a bombing target during the Second World War, and it was successfully hit several times.

The railway came to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity for the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some approximately 45 yrs before (1797), at which time it joined the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, allowing craft to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went through significant decline during the 1980's, because much of its manufacturers closed down, though it still is a thriving and expanding town today, principally due to the proximity to London, and its first class road and rail communications.

Chelmsford is positioned close to the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it's some 16 miles drive from Colchester and about thirty-two mls from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
