The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is situated upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, some 32 miles from the centre of London. Chelmsford boasts a populace of about 110,000 people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The site of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, Chelmsford was later the site of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD, and the settlement which expanded round the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon settlement succeeded the demise of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, whilst 100 years later it had taken on its present name of Chelmsford.

In the thirteenth century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and additionally became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th C some of the locals of Chelmsford became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the instigators were thereafter put to death in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the uprising.

The 17th Cent witnessed more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and put to death many supposed exponents of witchcraft.

For many centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became a considerable manufacturing town in the 19th C, manufacturing items such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its prominence in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a bombing target during the Second World War, and it was hit on a number of occasions.

The railway line came to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence to the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 yrs before (1797), at which time it linked the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, enabling craft to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town entered some decline during the nineteen-eighties, since a good deal of its industry ceased to be profitable, all the same it continues to be a successful and blooming town today, predominantly due to its closeness to London, and its first class road and rail communications.

The town stands close to the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it is some twenty six km car journey from Colchester and about thirty-two mls from central London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
