The county town of Essex, Chelmsford sits on the Can and Chelmer rivers, some 32 mls from the heart of London. Chelmsford boasts a population of approximately one hundred and eleven thousand people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

It is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The site of long past Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, the town was later on the location of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD, and the commune that expanded around the fortress was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . An Anglo Saxon settlement superseded the downfall of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was described as Celmeresfort, though by the year 1199 it was being referred to by its current name of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th Cent, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and also became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent a number of the locals of Chelmsford became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the agitators were thereafter executed in Chelmsford after the revolt was ended by Richard II.

The 17th C saw more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and put to death countless presumed witches.

For many generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned in to a substantial industrial town during the nineteenth century, manufacturing products such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its import in light industry caused it to be a bombing target in WWII, and it was hit several times.

The railway line came to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity for the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did roughly 45 yrs earlier (1797), at which time it connected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, allowing vessels to access the centre of town from the open sea.

The town moved into serious decline during the nineteen-eighties, because much of its industries went bust, though it is still a thriving and booming town today, primarily due to the proximity to the city of london, and its exceptional rail and road communications.

The town is found near the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it's some 26 kilometres driving distance from Colchester and about 51 kms from the centre of London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
