The county town of Essex, Chelmsford can be found upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, some 32 mls from the heart of London. The town has got a population of around 110,000 people, while the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford History: The site of early Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, the town was later on the location of a Roman fortress in around AD 60, and the settlement that evolved round the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . An Anglo Saxon camp followed after the demise of Roman control in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, nevertheless by the year 1199 it had taken on its current name of Chelmsford.

During the 13th century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and moreover became the seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century a number of the citizens of Chelmsford participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the main culprits were subsequently put to death in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the insurrection.

The 17th C saw many more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and hanged many alleged witches.

Across the generations a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford evolved in to a considerable industrial town in the 19th century, producing products such as ball bearings, traction engines, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its prominence in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a target for bombing during the Second World War, and it was struck many times.

The railway line came to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some 45 years before (1797), when it joined Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, encouraging boats to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town entered a time of decline during the nineteen-eighties, simply because a high percentage of its industry ceased to be profitable, though it still is a flourishing and blooming town today, predominantly due to its close proximity to the capital, and its outstanding rail and road communications.

The town sits just off the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it's around 26 km from Colchester and about 51 kms from the centre of the capital. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
