Essex's county town, Chelmsford is positioned on the Chelmer and Can rivers, around 32 mls from central London. The town has got a populace of around one hundred and eleven thousand residents, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

It is an early town that was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was changed into a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The location of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, Chelmsford was subsequently the site of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD, and the commune that expanded round the fortification was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . A Saxon camp succeeded the downfall of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, although one hundred years later it had become known by its current title of Chelmsford.

In the thirteenth century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex plus became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th C a number of the inhabitants of Chelmsford were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the main instigators were thereafter put to death in the town after the rebellion was ended by Richard II.

The 17th century saw yet more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and hanged countless presumed witches.

Through the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned in to an important manufacturing town in the 19th Cent, making such items as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its importance in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a bombing target in the Second World War, and it was struck on a number of occasions.

The railway line came to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence to the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 yrs earlier (1797), when it linked Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, encouraging ships to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went through a period of decline during the 1980's, because a high percentage of its manufacturers closed down, all the same it remains a flourishing and blooming town today, for the most part because of its proximity to London, and its terrific road and rail links.

The town lies near the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it's roughly 26 km from Colchester and about thirty-two mls from central London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
