Essex's county town, Chelmsford is located on the rivers Chelmer and Can, some thirty two miles from the heart of London. The town has got a population of approximately one hundred and eleven thousand people, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

It is an age-old town that was the location of a Roman fort in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was changed into a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

An Anglo Saxon encampment followed the decline of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was registered as Celmeresfort, whilst 100 years later being called by its present-day identity of Chelmsford.
