Essex's county town, Chelmsford sits on the Chelmer and Can rivers, roughly thirty two miles from central London. Chelmsford has a population of about 111,000 inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,300.

It is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was named a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

An Anglo Saxon camp superseded the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, though 100 years later being called by its present-day title of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th C, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex plus became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th century some of the occupants of Chelmsford became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a number of the ringleaders were consequently put to death in Chelmsford after the insurrection was ended by Richard II.

The 17th Cent saw lots more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and hanged numerous alleged exponents of witchcraft.
