The railway line came to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence to the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some forty five yrs before (1797), when it interconnected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, making it possible for watercraft to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town entered a time of decline in the 1980's, when much of its manufacturing facilities ceased to be profitable, even so it remains a successful and expanding town today, for the most part due to its proximity to the city of london, and its first rate rail and road connections.
