A Saxon encampment followed the downfall of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, even though one hundred years later it had taken on its current title of Chelmsford.

For many years a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford became a substantial manufacturing town during the 19th C, manufacturing products such as ball bearings, traction engines, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its prominence in light industrial engineering caused it to be a target for bombing in WWII, and it was successfully hit many times.

The railway line arrived in Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence for the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some 45 yrs before (1797), at which time it connected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, making it possible for boats to access the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford moved into serious decline in the 1980's, because a lot of its industry closed down, though it still is a successful and expanding town today, largely because of its nearness to the city of london, plus the outstanding road and rail communications.
