River Chelmer - - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The location of early Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, the town was subsequently the site of a Roman fortress in approximately the 1st century AD, and the commune which grew up round the fort was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . A Saxon camp succeeded the demise of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, however 100 years later it was being referred to by its present title of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th century, it became the county town of Essex and also became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th C many of the residents of Chelmsford became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the main culprits were consequently hung in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the uprising.

The 17th century saw even more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and put to death many suspected exponents of witchcraft.

For many generations a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford developed in to a serious manufacturing town during the 19th Cent, producing products such as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its importance in light industry led to its being a bombing target in WW2, and it was successfully hit on several occasions.

The railway found its way to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity to the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five yrs before (1797), at which time it joined Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, making it possible for boats to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town entered considerable decline in the 1980's, simply because much of its production facilities ceased to be profitable, nevertheless it still is a successful and growing town today, for the most part due to the nearness to the city of london, plus its terrific road and rail links.
