Essex's county town, Chelmsford stands upon the rivers Can and Chelmer, a driving distance of around thirty two miles from central London. The town boasts a population of around 111,500 people, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

A Saxon settlement succeeded the demise of Roman control in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was listed as Celmeresfort, whilst by the year 1199 it had taken on its present-day identity of Chelmsford.

In the 13th century, it became the county town of Essex and moreover became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent many of the residents of the town were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a number of the instigators were consequently put to death in Chelmsford after the rebellion was ended by Richard the Second.

The seventeenth century saw more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and hanged many assumed exponents of witchcraft.

Over the centuries a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford turned in to an important industrial town in the nineteenth century, manufacturing products such as steam engines, electrical engineering products, wirelesses, traction engines and ballbearings. Its import in light industrial engineering caused it to be a target for bombing during the Second World War, and it was successfully hit on a number of occasions.

The railway line found its way to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence for the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some 45 years earlier (1797), at which time it connected the town with the Blackwater estuary, enabling vessels to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.
