The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is set upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, some 32 miles from the heart of London. Chelmsford boasts a populace of about 110,000 people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

It is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin got the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The location of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, the town was later the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD, and the community that evolved surrounding the fortification was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . A Saxon community superseded the end of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was noted as Celmeresfort, whilst by the year 1199 it had become known by its contemporary identity of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th C, it became the county town of Essex and moreover became seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent a number of the citizens of Chelmsford took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, several of the leading instigators were later executed in the town after Richard the Second ended the rebellion.

The 17th century saw even more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and executed countless suspected exponents of witchcraft.

Across the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved into a vital industrial town during the 19th Cent, making goods such as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its import in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a bombing target in the Second World War, and it was successfully hit a number of times.

The train came to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence for the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 years earlier (1797), when it connected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, making it possible for vessels to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford moved into substantial decline during the nineteen-eighties, simply because a good deal of its industry closed, though it still is a flourishing and developing town today, for the most part due to the close proximity to London, plus the first class rail and road connections.

Chelmsford lies near the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it is about 16 mls from Colchester and about thirty-two mls from the heart of London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
