Chelmsford is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin was named a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The site of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, the town was later on the location of a Roman fort in roughly AD 60, and the town that developed round the fortress was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon encampment succeeded the end of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was listed as Celmeresfort, whilst by1189 it had become known by its current identity of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th Cent, it became the county town of Essex plus became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th century many of the residents of the town became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the instigators were ultimately put to death in the town after the insurrection was ended by Richard II.

The 17th century witnessed many more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and hanged many presumed exponents of witchcraft.

Over the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed into an important industrial town during the nineteenth century, manufacturing products such as steam engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products, traction engines and ballbearings. Its import in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a bombing target in the Second World War, and it was struck many times.

The train arrived in Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity for the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five yrs before (1797), at which time it interconnected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, making it possible for craft to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into a period of decline during the nineteen-eighties, simply because a good deal of its industry closed, though it is still a thriving and developing town today, principally because of its nearness to the city of london, plus the exceptional rail and road communications.
