Essex's county town, Chelmsford is situated on the Can and Chelmer rivers, some 32 miles from central London. The town boasts a population of approximately 110,000 people, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

It is an ancient town which was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

An Anglo Saxon community superseded the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was recorded as Celmeresfort, although one hundred years later it had taken on its present title of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th C, it became the county town of Essex and additionally became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent a number of the people of the town took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the leading instigators were accordingly put to death in the town after the uprising was ended by Richard II.

The seventeenth century saw lots more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and executed many suspected exponents of witchcraft.
