The county town of Essex, Chelmsford stands on the rivers Chelmer and Can, a drive of about thirty two mls from central London. Chelmsford has got a population of about 111,000 inhabitants, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

Chelmsford is an old town which was the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church became a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The location of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, the town was later the site of a Roman fortress in around AD 60, and the town which expanded around the fort was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon encampment succeeded the end of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, even though by1189 it had become known by its present-day name of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th Cent, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and moreover became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent many of the inhabitants of the town were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, several of the leading instigators were accordingly put to death in the town after the uprising was ended by Richard II.

The 17th century saw lots more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and put to death many presumed witches.

For many generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed in to a vital manufacturing town during the 19th Cent, crafting such products as ball bearings, agricultural machinery, traction engines, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its importance in light industry caused it to be a target of bombing in WW2, and it was hit on a few occasions.

The railway line came to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity for the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some roughly forty five years before (1797), at which time it interconnected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, helping craft to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford got into substantial decline in the 1980's, because a good deal of its industry closed, though it remains a successful and blooming town today, largely because of its nearness to London, and its good road and rail connections.

The town stands beside the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it's roughly sixteen miles from Colchester and about fifty-one kilometres from the centre of the capital. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
