The county town of Essex, Chelmsford sits upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, some thirty two miles from the heart of London. Chelmsford has got a populace of roughly 111,500 residents, while the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

Chelmsford is an age-old town that was the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

During the 14th Cent a number of the occupants of Chelmsford became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the instigators were later hung in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the insurrection.

The seventeenth century saw many more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and executed numerous assumed witches.

Across the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed in to a considerable manufacturing town in the 19th C, crafting such items as steam engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products, traction engines and ballbearings. Its prominence in light industry caused it to be a bombing target during the Second World War, and it was struck several times.

The train came to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity to the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 years before (1797), at which time it linked the town with the Blackwater estuary, letting vessels to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town entered a period of decline in the nineteen-eighties, as much of its industry closed, though it is still a successful and blooming town today, largely because of its closeness to the capital, and its good road and rail links.
