Essex's county town, Chelmsford can be found upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, approximately 32 mls from the city of London. The town has a populace of approximately 110,000 residents, while the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

It is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was named a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The location of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, the town was later on the site of a Roman fortress in about AD 60, and the town that developed in the locality of the fortress was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon community succeeded the downfall of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was recorded as Celmeresfort, whilst by1189 being called by its current title of Chelmsford.

During the 13th century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and furthermore became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th century a number of the residents of Chelmsford participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the agitators were thereafter put to death in the town after Richard II ended the revolt.

The 17th century witnessed more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and executed countless supposed witches.

Through the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became a substantial industrial town during the 19th C, producing items such as ball bearings, agricultural machinery, traction engines, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its importance in light industrial engineering led to its being a target of bombing in WW2, and it was hit on a number of occasions.

The railway found its way to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence for the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some about forty five years earlier (1797), when it joined Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, helping ships to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town entered considerable decline in the 1980's, mainly because much of its industry shut down, even so it still is a thriving and booming town today, for the most part because of its proximity to the city of london, plus its quality road and rail communications.
