The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is located upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, some thirty two mls from central London. Chelmsford boasts a populace of roughly 110,000 occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fort in around 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin became a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford History: The location of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, the town was subsequently the location of a Roman fort in around 60 AD, and the encampment which grew up round the fortification was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . An Anglo Saxon camp succeeded the downfall of Roman control in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, although one hundred years later it was being referred to by its modern name of Chelmsford.

As early as the thirteenth century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and furthermore became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent some of the people of the town were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the main culprits were thereafter executed in the town after the uprising was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th Cent witnessed even more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and hanged numerous alleged exponents of witchcraft.

For many generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became a major manufacturing town in the 19th C, producing products such as ball bearings, agricultural machinery, traction engines, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its import in light industry led to its being a bombing target during WW2, and it was hit a number of times.

The railway found its way to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence to the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 yrs before (1797), when it joined Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, which made it possible for craft to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went through a period of decline in the nineteen-eighties, mainly because a high percentage of its industries ceased to be profitable, though it remains a successful and growing town today, principally because of its close proximity to the city of london, and the superb road and rail communications.

Chelmsford lies adjacent to the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it's some 16 mls driving distance from Colchester and about thirty-two mls from the centre of the capital. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
