Essex's county town, Chelmsford is positioned on the rivers Can and Chelmer, some thirty two mls from the city of London. The town has a populace of about 111,500 residents, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

Through the years a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford became a vital industrial town in the nineteenth century, manufacturing items such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its importance in light industry led to its being a target for bombing during World War 2, and it was struck many times.

The railway found its way to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence to the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 years earlier (1797), when it connected the town with the Blackwater estuary, which allowed ships to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town entered some decline during the 1980's, as much of its industry ceased to be profitable, though it continues to be a flourishing and blooming town today, principally because of its proximity to London, plus its exceptional road and rail connections.
