A Saxon encampment followed the demise of Roman control in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, nonetheless one hundred years later it had become known by its present-day identity of Chelmsford.

In the fourteenth century some of the citizens of the town became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a few of the agitators were later hung in the town after the rebellion was ended by Richard the Second.

Its import in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a bombing target during WWII, and it was successfully hit on a few occasions.

The railway line found its way to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence to the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some forty five years earlier (1797), at which time it connected the town with the Blackwater estuary, letting vessels to access the centre of town from the open sea.

The town moved into significant decline in the 1980's, as a lot of its industry shut down, though it remains a successful and expanding town today, largely due to its nearness to London, and its first rate rail and road links.
