Essex's county town, Chelmsford is situated on the Can and Chelmer rivers, some 32 miles from the heart of London. The town has got a population of roughly one hundred and eleven thousand residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

It is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The location of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, the town was subsequently the location of a Roman fortress in about the 1st century AD, and the village that grew up round the fort was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon community followed after the demise of the Romans in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was described as Celmeresfort, whilst by the year 1199 it had taken on its contemporary title of Chelmsford.

At the time of the thirteenth century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and furthermore became the seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century some of the inhabitants of Chelmsford were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a few of the ringleaders were consequently hung in the town after Richard the Second ended the uprising.

The seventeenth century witnessed many more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and put to death numerous alleged exponents of witchcraft.

For several years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became a major industrial town in the 19th C, producing products such as steam engines, electrical engineering products, wirelesses, traction engines and ballbearings. Its importance in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a bombing target in WWII, and it was successfully struck on several occasions.

The railway line arrived at Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence for the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did about 45 yrs earlier (1797), at which time it connected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, allowing watercraft to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town moved into some decline in the 1980's, because a high percentage of its industries closed down, even so it is still a thriving and booming town today, principally due to its nearness to the capital, plus its exceptional road and rail communications.

The town is set close to the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it's some 26 km from Colchester and about 32 miles from the centre of the capital. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
