Essex's county town, Chelmsford is located on the Chelmer and Can rivers, some 32 mls from central London. Chelmsford boasts a populace of around 111,000 inhabitants, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church became a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The site of early Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, the town was later on the site of a Roman fort in around AD 60, and the encampment that developed surrounding the fort was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon settlement superseded the end of the Romans in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was registered as Celmeresfort, whilst one hundred years later it had taken on its present-day name of Chelmsford.

In the 13th Cent, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and also became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th century some of the people of the town participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, several of the leading instigators were accordingly put to death in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the revolt.

The seventeenth century witnessed many more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and hanged numerous supposed exponents of witchcraft.

Over the generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed into a considerable manufacturing town in the nineteenth century, manufacturing items such as steam engines, electrical engineering products, wirelesses, traction engines and ballbearings. Its importance in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a bombing target during WWII, and it was successfully hit several times.

The railway line came to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity for the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did around 45 years before (1797), at which time it interconnected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, helping boats to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went through some decline during the nineteen-eighties, since much of its industry closed, though it still is a successful and expanding town today, for the most part due to the close proximity to London, plus its first class road and rail connections.

The town is situated adjacent to the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it is about 16 miles car journey from Colchester and about 51 kilometers from central London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
