Essex's county town, Chelmsford is found on the Can and Chelmer rivers, some thirty two mls from the city of London. The town has a population of about 111,000 occupants, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The site of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, the town was subsequently the location of a Roman fortress in approximately the 1st century AD, and the settlement which grew up around the fortification was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon camp followed the demise of Roman control in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was recorded as Celmeresfort, even though by the year 1199 it was being referred to by its contemporary title of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th C, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and moreover became seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent many of the inhabitants of Chelmsford took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a number of the main culprits were consequently put to death in the town after the uprising was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th century witnessed lots more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and hanged numerous alleged witches.

For several years a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford turned into a considerable manufacturing town during the 19th Cent, manufacturing such products as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its import in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a target for bombing in World War 2, and it was struck a few times.

The railway line arrived at the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity to the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some forty five yrs earlier (1797), at which time it interconnected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, helping watercraft to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town got into some decline during the 1980's, when a good deal of its manufacturing facilities ceased to be profitable, though it remains a thriving and blooming town today, predominantly because of its nearness to the capital, plus its quality road and rail communications.

The town is set near the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it is roughly 16 miles driving distance from Colchester and about fifty-one kilometers from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
