Essex's county town, Chelmsford is positioned on the rivers Chelmer and Can, some thirty two mls from central London. The town boasts a population of around 111,000 occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The location of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, the town was subsequently the location of a Roman fortification in roughly 60 AD, and the encampment that evolved around the fortress was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . An Anglo Saxon encampment came after the decline of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, although by the year 1199 it had taken on its modern title of Chelmsford.

As long ago thirteenth century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and moreover became seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century many of the people of the town became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the ringleaders were subsequently hung in Chelmsford after the insurrection was ended by Richard II.

The 17th Cent saw lots more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and put to death many presumed witches.

For many years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed into a major manufacturing town during the 19th Cent, crafting products such as steam engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products, traction engines and ballbearings. Its importance in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a bombing target during World War 2, and it was struck several times.

The railway arrived at the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some forty five yrs before (1797), when it joined Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, helping vessels to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into a period of decline during the 1980's, as a high percentage of its manufacturers closed, even so it still is a thriving and developing town today, principally due to the closeness to the city of london, and its first rate road and rail links.
