The county town of Essex, Chelmsford can be found on the Chelmer and Can rivers, some thirty two mls from the heart of London. Chelmsford has a population of roughly 110,000 inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

Chelmsford is an early town that was the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The location of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, Chelmsford was later the site of a Roman fort in roughly AD 60, and the settlement that grew up in the locality of the fortress was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon community followed after the demise of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, whilst by1189 it had taken on its contemporary identity of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and in addition became seat of the local assize. During the 14th century many of the people of the town participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the leading agitators were accordingly hung in the town after the revolt was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th Cent saw lots more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and put to death many assumed witches.

Through the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became a considerable manufacturing town in the 19th Cent, producing products such as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its importance in light industry led to its being a target of bombing during the Second World War, and it was successfully hit a few times.

The railway line came to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence to the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some forty five years earlier (1797), at which time it connected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, making it possible for vessels to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went through serious decline in the 1980's, when a good deal of its industry closed down, yet it remains a flourishing and expanding town today, for the most part due to its closeness to the capital, and its superb rail and road connections.

The town stands close to the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it is roughly sixteen miles from Colchester and about 32 miles from central London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
