The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is found upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, some 32 mls from the centre of London. Chelmsford has got a population of around 111,500 people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

It is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was changed into a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The location of early Bronze Age and Neolithic encampments, the town was subsequently the site of a Roman fortress in around the first century AD, and the village that grew up surrounding the fortress was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . A Saxon community followed after the downfall of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was noted as Celmeresfort, although by the year 1199 being called by its current title of Chelmsford.

In the 13th Cent, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and furthermore became the seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century many of the residents of Chelmsford became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a number of the leading culprits were ultimately put to death in the town after Richard the Second ended the uprising.

The seventeenth century witnessed even more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and put to death countless supposed witches.

For several generations a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford developed into a major industrial town in the nineteenth century, producing items such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its prominence in light industrial engineering led to its being a target of bombing during WW2, and it was successfully hit several times.

The railway found its way to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity for the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done around 45 years earlier (1797), at which time it joined the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, enabling boats to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into a time of decline during the 1980's, as a lot of its industry ceased to be profitable, but it continues to be a thriving and growing town today, mainly due to the close proximity to the capital, and the first class rail and road connections.
