The county town of Essex, Chelmsford stands upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, some 32 miles from the city of London. Chelmsford has a population of about 110,000 occupants, while the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

It is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church was changed into a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The site of early Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, the town was subsequently the site of a Roman fortification in approximately the 1st century AD, and the commune that evolved around the fort was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon community followed the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, whilst 100 years later it had taken on its present name of Chelmsford.

In the 13th Cent, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex plus became seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent a number of the people of the town became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the leading culprits were ultimately hung in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the insurrection.

The 17th Cent witnessed lots more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and executed countless supposed witches.

For many centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became a significant industrial town in the 19th Cent, making such goods as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its import in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a target for bombing during WWII, and it was successfully hit on a few occasions.

The train came to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence for the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did around forty five yrs before (1797), when it linked the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, letting craft to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went into a time of decline in the nineteen-eighties, simply because a high percentage of its production facilities went bust, though it continues to be a thriving and blooming town today, mainly due to its proximity to the capital, plus its exceptional road and rail communications.

Chelmsford is found near the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it's around sixteen mls drive from Colchester and about fifty-one kilometres from central London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
