A Saxon camp superseded the downfall of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was documented as Celmeresfort, whilst 100 years later it had taken on its present-day name of Chelmsford.

During the 14th C a number of the inhabitants of the town became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the leading culprits were consequently executed in the town after Richard the Second ended the revolt.

The seventeenth century witnessed more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and put to death many suspected witches.

Over the generations a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford turned in to a substantial industrial town in the 19th Cent, manufacturing goods such as steam engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products, traction engines and ballbearings. Its significance in light industry led to its being a bombing target in WWII, and it was struck many times.

The railway found its way to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence to the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some forty five years before (1797), at which time it joined the town with the Blackwater estuary, helping craft to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into some decline in the 1980's, when much of its plants closed down, even so it remains a flourishing and expanding town today, for the most part due to the close proximity to the city of london, and the excellent road and rail connections.

The town lies adjacent to the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it's about 16 miles from Colchester and about 32 mls from the heart of London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
