River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford History: The location of early Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, the town was later on the location of a Roman fortress in approximately the first century AD, and the village which evolved around the fort was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon encampment superseded the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was noted as Celmeresfort, nevertheless one hundred years later it was being referred to by its current name of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century many of the residents of the town participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a number of the agitators were subsequently put to death in Chelmsford after the insurrection was ended by Richard II.

The 17th century saw even more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and hanged countless suspected exponents of witchcraft.

Across the generations a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford evolved into a major manufacturing town in the nineteenth century, manufacturing such products as ball bearings, agricultural machinery, traction engines, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its import in light industrial engineering led to its being a target for bombing during World War 2, and it was successfully struck a number of times.

The railway arrived in Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence to the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five years before (1797), when it linked the town with the Blackwater estuary, making it possible for vessels to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went into a time of decline in the 1980's, since a lot of its industrial facilities ceased to be profitable, nonetheless it continues to be a flourishing and developing town today, for the most part due to its closeness to the capital, plus its first rate road and rail connections.
