Essex's county town, Chelmsford is found on the Chelmer and Can rivers, some 32 miles from central London. Chelmsford has a populace of some 111,000 occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

It is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fort in around 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church was named a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The location of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, the town was later the site of a Roman fortress in roughly AD 60, and the settlement that grew up surrounding the fort was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . An Anglo Saxon camp followed the downfall of Roman control in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was recognized as Celmeresfort, whilst one hundred years later it had taken on its present-day name of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and in addition became seat of the local assize. In the 14th C a number of the residents of the town took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the ringleaders were consequently hung in Chelmsford after the uprising was ended by Richard II.

The 17th Cent witnessed many more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and hanged numerous assumed witches.

For many years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved into a substantial industrial town during the 19th C, producing such products as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its prominence in light industry led to its being a bombing target in the Second World War, and it was successfully struck on a number of occasions.

The railway arrived in the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity for the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 yrs earlier (1797), when it linked Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, encouraging craft to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town moved into a period of decline during the 1980's, when much of its industry closed down, even so it still is a flourishing and blooming town today, mainly due to the closeness to London, and the outstanding road and rail communications.

Chelmsford sits beside the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it's roughly sixteen miles drive from Colchester and about 32 mls from the centre of the capital. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
