Essex's county town, Chelmsford is positioned on the rivers Can and Chelmer, some 32 miles from the heart of London. The town boasts a populace of around 110,000 inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

It is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fort in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford History: The location of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, Chelmsford was later the site of a Roman fortification in around AD 60, and the community that grew up round the fort was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . An Anglo Saxon camp superseded the demise of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, although by the year 1199 it had become known by its present title of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and in addition became seat of the local assize. During the 14th century many of the residents of the town were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the leading culprits were ultimately executed in the town after the insurrection was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th Cent saw more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and executed countless assumed exponents of witchcraft.

For several generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved in to a substantial industrial town during the 19th Cent, producing such products as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its prominence in light industrial engineering caused it to be a target of bombing during World War 2, and it was hit quite a few times.

The railway came to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity for the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did around forty five years before (1797), at which time it connected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, making it possible for watercraft to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford entered substantial decline during the nineteen-eighties, simply because a high percentage of its industry went bust, though it remains a successful and expanding town today, primarily because of its close proximity to London, plus its exceptional road and rail connections.

The town is located close to the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it is about sixteen miles drive from Colchester and about thirty-two miles from the centre of London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
