The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is set upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, around thirty two miles from the heart of London. Chelmsford has got a populace of approximately 111,000 people, while the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

It is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The site of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic encampments, the town was later the site of a Roman fortress in around AD 60, and the town which expanded round the fortress was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon encampment followed the downfall of Roman control in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, although by1189 it had become known by its modern title of Chelmsford.

During the 13th century, it became the county town of Essex and in addition became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent a number of the inhabitants of the town took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a number of the agitators were accordingly executed in Chelmsford after the rebellion was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th C witnessed yet more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and executed countless suspected witches.

For many centuries a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford became a major industrial town during the 19th century, crafting such goods as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its significance in light industry resulted in its being a bombing target in the Second World War, and it was hit a few times.

The train came to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence to the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five years before (1797), at which time it interconnected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, which made it possible for watercraft to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went through considerable decline during the nineteen-eighties, when a high percentage of its industrial facilities shut down, even so it remains a thriving and booming town today, primarily due to the proximity to the capital, and the terrific road and rail links.

Chelmsford lies adjacent to the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it's about 16 mls driving distance from Colchester and about 32 mls from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
