The county town of Essex, Chelmsford can be found on the rivers Chelmer and Can, some thirty two mls from central London. The town has a population of about 111,500 inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

Chelmsford is an old town that was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford History: The site of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, Chelmsford was subsequently the site of a Roman fortress in roughly 60 AD, and the commune which expanded round the fort was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon settlement followed after the downfall of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, though 100 years later it had become known by its contemporary name of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and moreover became seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century a number of the occupants of Chelmsford were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a number of the agitators were consequently put to death in Chelmsford after the revolt was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th century saw yet more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and executed countless assumed witches.

For many generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned in to a major industrial town during the 19th Cent, crafting such goods as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its prominence in light industry caused it to be a bombing target during WW2, and it was struck several times.

The train arrived in the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence to the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 yrs before (1797), at which time it interconnected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, which made it possible for watercraft to access the centre of town from the open sea.

The town moved into a period of decline in the nineteen-eighties, when much of its manufacturing facilities closed down, even so it continues to be a thriving and growing town today, primarily because of its nearness to London, plus its good road and rail links.

The town is positioned beside the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it is approximately twenty six km drive from Colchester and about 51 kilometers from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
