The county town of Essex, Chelmsford lies upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, a driving distance of around thirty two miles from the centre of London. Chelmsford boasts a populace of approximately one hundred and eleven thousand people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

An Anglo Saxon community came after the downfall of Roman control in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, even though one hundred years later it had become known by its present name of Chelmsford.

During the 13th C, it became the county town of Essex and furthermore became seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent some of the residents of the town were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the agitators were ultimately hung in the town after Richard the Second ended the insurrection.

The seventeenth century witnessed even more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and put to death numerous presumed witches.

For several years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed in to a serious industrial town during the nineteenth century, manufacturing goods such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its significance in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a target for bombing during World War 2, and it was hit a number of times.

The railway line found its way to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity to the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five years before (1797), at which time it linked the town with the Blackwater estuary, helping vessels to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.
