River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The site of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, Chelmsford was subsequently the location of a Roman fortification in roughly the first century AD, and the village which expanded around the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon settlement followed the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, whilst by1189 it was being referred to by its current name of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th C, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and furthermore became seat of the local assize. In the 14th C many of the inhabitants of the town became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the main instigators were consequently put to death in Chelmsford after the uprising was ended by Richard II.

The seventeenth century saw yet more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and put to death numerous suspected witches.

Over the years a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford evolved in to a vital manufacturing town during the 19th century, making such items as ball bearings, agricultural machinery, traction engines, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its import in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a target of bombing during WW2, and it was successfully hit on several occasions.

The train arrived at Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity for the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some 45 yrs before (1797), at which time it linked Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, allowing ships to access the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford got into a period of decline in the 1980's, when a good deal of its industry shut down, all the same it continues to be a successful and booming town today, principally due to the close proximity to the capital, and the exceptional road and rail links.

The town is situated near the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it's approximately 26 kilometers from Colchester and about 51 km from the centre of the capital. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
