Essex's county town, Chelmsford lies on the rivers Chelmer and Can, some 32 mls from central London. Chelmsford boasts a populace of about 110,000 occupants, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fort in around 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The location of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, the town was later on the site of a Roman fortification in about the first century AD, and the village which evolved in the locality of the fortification was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . A Saxon encampment superseded the demise of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, although one hundred years later it had taken on its contemporary identity of Chelmsford.

In the 13th C, it took on the title of county town of Essex and in addition became seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century many of the people of the town became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the agitators were consequently executed in the town after the revolt was ended by Richard II.

The seventeenth century witnessed many more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and executed many presumed witches.

Over the centuries a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford turned in to a major manufacturing town in the 19th C, producing such items as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its importance in light industry resulted in its being a bombing target in WW2, and it was successfully hit many times.

The railway arrived at Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity to the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done around forty five years earlier (1797), when it joined Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, which made it possible for craft to access the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went through substantial decline during the nineteen-eighties, since a good deal of its industry shut down, even so it remains a thriving and blooming town today, for the most part due to the close proximity to the city of london, and the first class road and rail communications.

Chelmsford stands close to the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it's around sixteen miles from Colchester and about thirty-two mls from the centre of London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
