The county town of Essex, Chelmsford sits upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, some 32 mls from the centre of London. Chelmsford has a population of about one hundred and eleven thousand inhabitants, while the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

It is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The site of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, Chelmsford was later on the site of a Roman fortification in approximately the 1st century AD, and the community that developed surrounding the fortress was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon community succeeded the downfall of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was listed as Celmeresfort, however 100 years later it had become known by its present title of Chelmsford.

During the 13th Cent, it took on the title of county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent many of the residents of Chelmsford became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the agitators were thereafter executed in the town after Richard the Second ended the insurrection.

The 17th Cent witnessed lots more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and hanged countless assumed exponents of witchcraft.

Over the generations a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford developed into an important manufacturing town during the 19th Cent, producing such goods as steam engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products, traction engines and ballbearings. Its significance in light industrial engineering caused it to be a bombing target in WW2, and it was successfully hit a few times.

The train arrived at the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence to the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some forty five years earlier (1797), at which time it joined the town with the Blackwater estuary, helping ships to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford got into some decline in the 1980's, simply because a lot of its manufacturing facilities closed down, even so it continues to be a successful and growing town today, mainly due to its proximity to London, plus the quality road and rail communications.

The town is found near the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it is around 16 miles driving distance from Colchester and about fifty-one km from the centre of the capital. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
