Essex's county town, Chelmsford sits upon the rivers Can and Chelmer, a driving distance of around thirty two mls from central London. Chelmsford has a populace of some 111,500 occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

Chelmsford is an early town which was the location of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin became a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford History: The location of early Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, the town was later on the location of a Roman fortress in roughly 60 AD, and the community that expanded around the fortification was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . A Saxon community followed after the decline of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was noted as Celmeresfort, although by1189 it was being referred to by its present identity of Chelmsford.

In the 13th century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and moreover became seat of the local assize. During the 14th century many of the citizens of the town were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the leading culprits were thereafter put to death in the town after the rebellion was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th C saw even more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and hanged many assumed witches.

Across the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved in to a major industrial town in the 19th C, manufacturing products such as steam engines, traction engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products and ballbearings. Its import in light industry led to its being a target of bombing during World War 2, and it was successfully struck on several occasions.

The train arrived at Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity for the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some about 45 yrs before (1797), when it joined Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, which made it possible for boats to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town entered a time of decline during the nineteen-eighties, because a good deal of its manufacturing facilities went bust, even so it remains a successful and growing town today, for the most part due to its nearness to the capital, plus its first class road and rail links.
