The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is found on the Can and Chelmer rivers, some thirty two mls from the centre of London. The town has a populace of approximately one hundred and eleven thousand people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

It is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin became a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The location of early Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, Chelmsford was later on the location of a Roman fortress in roughly the 1st century AD, and the encampment which grew up surrounding the fortification was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon encampment superseded the end of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, however by1189 it had taken on its present-day title of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th C, it became the county town of Essex and in addition became the seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century a number of the people of the town became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the instigators were thereafter executed in Chelmsford after the insurrection was ended by Richard II.

The 17th C saw even more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and hanged many supposed witches.

Through the centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved into a major manufacturing town during the 19th Cent, crafting products such as steam engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products, traction engines and ballbearings. Its prominence in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a bombing target in WW2, and it was hit several times.

The train came to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity for the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done around forty five yrs before (1797), at which time it joined the town with the Blackwater estuary, letting ships to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford moved into a period of decline in the nineteen-eighties, mainly because a good deal of its manufacturers closed, though it remains a successful and expanding town today, principally because of its close proximity to London, and the first class rail and road communications.

The town lies near the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it's roughly 26 km driving distance from Colchester and about thirty-two miles from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
