The county town of Essex, Chelmsford sits on the rivers Can and Chelmer, some 32 mls from the centre of London. Chelmsford has got a population of about 110,000 residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was changed into a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford History: The site of early Bronze Age and Neolithic encampments, Chelmsford was later on the location of a Roman fortification in about AD 60, and the town that evolved in the locality of the fortress was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon encampment followed the demise of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, however by the year 1199 it was being referred to by its modern name of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th C, it took on the title of county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century some of the citizens of the town were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the agitators were ultimately executed in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the insurrection.

The 17th C saw many more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and put to death countless supposed witches.

Across the generations a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford evolved in to an important industrial town during the 19th century, producing such products as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its importance in light industrial engineering caused it to be a bombing target in the Second World War, and it was struck on a few occasions.

The railway line arrived at the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence to the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some around forty five yrs before (1797), when it connected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, encouraging craft to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town got into some decline during the 1980's, since much of its industry went bust, though it continues to be a flourishing and growing town today, for the most part due to its nearness to the city of london, and its good road and rail connections.

Chelmsford sits adjacent to the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it is around sixteen mls driving distance from Colchester and about thirty-two mls from the centre of London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
