Essex's county town, Chelmsford is found on the Can and Chelmer rivers, some thirty two mls from the city of London. Chelmsford has a population of around one hundred and eleven thousand people, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The location of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, the town was later on the location of a Roman fortress in about the 1st century AD, and the encampment that grew up surrounding the fortification was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . An Anglo Saxon settlement followed the downfall of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was recorded as Celmeresfort, however by the year 1199 it had become known by its contemporary name of Chelmsford.

During the 13th century, it became the county town of Essex plus became seat of the local assize. During the 14th C some of the residents of the town were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the leading agitators were accordingly hung in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the rebellion.

The seventeenth century witnessed more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and executed countless supposed exponents of witchcraft.

For several centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became a major industrial town during the 19th Cent, producing such products as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its significance in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a bombing target during the Second World War, and it was struck on a number of occasions.

The train came to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity for the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five years before (1797), when it interconnected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, allowing watercraft to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford moved into a time of decline during the nineteen-eighties, as much of its production facilities closed down, though it is still a flourishing and blooming town today, mostly due to the close proximity to London, plus its quality road and rail communications.

Chelmsford is situated close to the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it's approximately sixteen miles driving distance from Colchester and about 51 kilometres from the centre of the capital.
