The county town of Essex, Chelmsford sits on the rivers Chelmer and Can, some 32 mls from central London. The town has got a populace of roughly 110,000 inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,300.

It is an old town which was the location of a Roman fort in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was named a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The location of early Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, Chelmsford was later the site of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD, and the community which developed round the fortification was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon community superseded the downfall of the Romans in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, even though by1189 it had become known by its contemporary title of Chelmsford.

In the 13th C, it became the county town of Essex plus became seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent a number of the inhabitants of Chelmsford became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the main instigators were accordingly executed in Chelmsford after the insurrection was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th C saw many more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and executed many suspected witches.

Across the centuries a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford turned into a vital manufacturing town in the 19th C, manufacturing products such as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its prominence in light industry caused it to be a target for bombing in WW2, and it was successfully hit on a few occasions.

The train arrived in Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity to the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some forty five years before (1797), when it linked Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, which allowed craft to access the centre of town from the open sea.

The town moved into a time of decline in the 1980's, as a high percentage of its industry closed, though it remains a successful and expanding town today, primarily because of its nearness to the capital, and its terrific rail and road communications.

The town is positioned just off the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it's about 26 kilometers car journey from Colchester and about 32 mls from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
