The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is set upon the rivers Can and Chelmer, a car journey of some 32 miles from the heart of London. Chelmsford has a population of around 111,500 inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fort in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church was named a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The site of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, the town was later on the location of a Roman fortress in approximately the first century AD, and the village which grew up round the fortress was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . An Anglo Saxon community superseded the end of Roman control in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was described as Celmeresfort, whilst 100 years later it had become known by its present name of Chelmsford.

As early as the thirteenth century, it took on the title of county town of Essex plus became seat of the local assize. During the 14th C a number of the citizens of Chelmsford took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a few of the agitators were consequently put to death in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the revolt.

The 17th C saw many more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and hanged numerous alleged exponents of witchcraft.

For several generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved in to a major industrial town during the 19th century, manufacturing products such as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its importance in light industrial engineering caused it to be a bombing target in WW2, and it was hit on a number of occasions.

The railway arrived at Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence for the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some around forty five years earlier (1797), at which time it interconnected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, helping vessels to access the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went through substantial decline in the 1980's, mainly because much of its industry shut down, even so it continues to be a thriving and developing town today, principally because of its closeness to the city of london, plus its good rail and road communications.

Chelmsford sits beside the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it's approximately twenty six km from Colchester and about thirty-two mls from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
