The railway found its way to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity to the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did roughly 45 years earlier (1797), at which time it interconnected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, allowing boats to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went through a period of decline during the 1980's, because a lot of its plants ceased to be profitable, even so it still is a flourishing and booming town today, for the most part because of its nearness to the capital, and the outstanding road and rail communications.
