The county town of Essex, Chelmsford can be found on the rivers Chelmer and Can, some thirty two miles from the city of London. Chelmsford boasts a population of approximately one hundred and eleven thousand people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The site of early Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, the town was later on the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD, and the commune which grew up around the fortification was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . An Anglo Saxon camp succeeded the downfall of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was recognized as Celmeresfort, though 100 years later it had become known by its present name of Chelmsford.

In the 13th century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and in addition became seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century many of the locals of the town were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a few of the main culprits were consequently hung in the town after Richard the Second ended the uprising.

The 17th century saw many more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and hanged countless alleged exponents of witchcraft.

Over the generations a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford turned into a major manufacturing town during the 19th century, manufacturing items such as ball bearings, traction engines, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses.
