The county town of Essex, Chelmsford lies upon the rivers Can and Chelmer, some thirty two mls from central London. The town has a population of about one hundred and eleven thousand inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The site of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, Chelmsford was later the site of a Roman fortress in roughly the first century AD, and the village that developed in the vicinity of the fortification was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . A Saxon encampment came after the decline of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, even though by the year 1199 being called by its present name of Chelmsford.

During the thirteenth century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and in addition became seat of the local assize. In the 14th century a number of the residents of the town were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the agitators were thereafter executed in the town after the uprising was ended by Richard II.

The seventeenth century witnessed yet more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and put to death many supposed witches.

Over the years a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford became a major manufacturing town in the 19th C, producing such goods as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its significance in light industrial engineering led to its being a bombing target in WW2, and it was successfully hit on a few occasions.

The railway came to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity to the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did about forty five years earlier (1797), at which time it linked the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, allowing vessels to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town entered a period of decline during the 1980's, because much of its manufacturers ceased to be profitable, even so it continues to be a thriving and expanding town today, primarily due to its nearness to London, plus the excellent road and rail links.

The town can be found beside the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it is about twenty six km driving distance from Colchester and about 32 miles from the centre of the capital. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
