Essex's county town, Chelmsford sits on the rivers Chelmer and Can, some thirty two miles from the heart of London. Chelmsford boasts a populace of roughly 111,500 residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,300.

It is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church was named a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The location of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, the town was later the location of a Roman fortress in roughly AD 60, and the community which grew up round the fortress was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon encampment came after the downfall of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, though one hundred years later being called by its modern title of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th Cent, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex plus became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th C many of the people of the town took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the agitators were accordingly hung in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the insurrection.

The 17th C saw yet more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and executed many presumed exponents of witchcraft.

Throughout the centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became a major industrial town during the nineteenth century, producing products such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its significance in light industry led to its being a target for bombing during WW2, and it was hit on a few occasions.

The railway line found its way to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence to the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some forty five years before (1797), when it linked the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, encouraging craft to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town moved into some decline during the 1980's, since much of its industry closed, nonetheless it remains a successful and booming town today, for the most part due to its close proximity to London, and the terrific road and rail communications.
