An Anglo Saxon settlement superseded the end of Roman control in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was recognized as Celmeresfort, nonetheless one hundred years later being called by its current identity of Chelmsford.

The town entered a time of decline during the nineteen-eighties, as a good deal of its industrial facilities shut down, though it continues to be a flourishing and developing town today, mostly because of its proximity to the city of london, plus the superb rail and road communications.
