The county town of Essex, Chelmsford sits on the Can and Chelmer rivers, about thirty two miles from central London. The town has a populace of about 111,500 occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

It is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The location of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, the town was later the site of a Roman fort in around the first century AD, and the town which grew up around the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . An Anglo Saxon encampment came after the downfall of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was described as Celmeresfort, whilst by the year 1199 being called by its modern name of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th Cent, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex plus became seat of the local assize. During the 14th century many of the residents of the town became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, several of the agitators were accordingly executed in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the rebellion.

The 17th Cent saw even more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and executed numerous supposed witches.

Across the centuries a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford became a substantial industrial town during the nineteenth century, manufacturing such products as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its prominence in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a bombing target in WWII, and it was hit on a number of occasions.

The railway arrived at Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence for the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some about 45 yrs earlier (1797), when it linked Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, making it possible for ships to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into some decline in the 1980's, mainly because a good deal of its industry shut down, though it continues to be a thriving and developing town today, largely due to its closeness to the city of london, plus its first class road and rail connections.

Chelmsford is found near the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it's around sixteen miles from Colchester and about thirty-two mls from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
