The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is situated upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, some thirty two miles from central London. The town has got a population of some 111,000 residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,300.

It is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - - 411097The Historical Past of Chelmsford: The site of long past Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, Chelmsford was later on the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD, and the community that developed around the fort was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . An Anglo Saxon settlement succeeded the decline of Roman control in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, however one hundred years later being called by its modern title of Chelmsford.

As long ago thirteenth century, it became the county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent a number of the residents of Chelmsford took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a few of the instigators were subsequently put to death in Chelmsford after the rebellion was ended by Richard II.

The 17th Cent saw yet more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and executed countless supposed exponents of witchcraft.

Across the centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned into an important manufacturing town during the 19th C, crafting products such as steam engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products, traction engines and ballbearings. Its importance in light industry caused it to be a target for bombing during WWII, and it was successfully struck several times.

The train arrived at the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence for the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 yrs earlier (1797), at which time it linked the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, encouraging watercraft to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went through serious decline in the 1980's, mainly because a good deal of its industries ceased to be profitable, even so it still is a successful and developing town today, largely because of its closeness to the capital, and its first rate rail and road connections.
