Essex's county town, Chelmsford stands upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, some 32 miles from the heart of London. Chelmsford has a population of around 110,000 inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).
