Essex's county town, Chelmsford is set on the Can and Chelmer rivers, a car journey of some 32 mls from the heart of London. The town has got a population of approximately 111,000 people, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The location of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, Chelmsford was later the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD, and the village that developed around the fortification was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon settlement followed the end of the Romans in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was described as Celmeresfort, even though by the year 1199 it was being referred to by its contemporary title of Chelmsford.

As early as the thirteenth century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and in addition became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th C a number of the people of Chelmsford participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the instigators were subsequently executed in the town after the insurrection was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th C witnessed yet more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and executed countless alleged witches.

Over the centuries a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford turned into a substantial industrial town in the 19th century, manufacturing goods such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its import in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a target for bombing during WWII, and it was successfully hit many times.

The train came to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence for the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did roughly forty five yrs earlier (1797), when it interconnected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, letting vessels to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford moved into some decline during the 1980's, since much of its industry closed, although it is still a successful and expanding town today, principally due to the closeness to the capital, and its excellent rail and road links.

Chelmsford can be found adjacent to the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it's approximately twenty six kilometers drive from Colchester and about 32 miles from the centre of London.
