Its importance in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a bombing target during WWII, and it was successfully struck on a few occasions.

The railway found its way to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence to the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done approximately forty five years earlier (1797), at which time it interconnected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, making it possible for craft to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

The town got into substantial decline in the nineteen-eighties, when a lot of its industry shut down, in spite of this it remains a thriving and expanding town today, mostly because of its proximity to the capital, plus its quality road and rail links.
