The county town of Essex, Chelmsford sits on the rivers Chelmer and Can, some thirty two miles from the city of London. Chelmsford boasts a populace of around 111,500 residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

It is an old town that was the location of a Roman fort in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church was changed into a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The site of early Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, the town was later the location of a Roman fort in around the 1st century AD, and the town which evolved round the fortification was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . A Saxon settlement superseded the decline of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, whilst by the year 1199 being called by its contemporary identity of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th C, it took on the title of county town of Essex and also became the seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century many of the people of Chelmsford participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the leading culprits were later hung in the town after Richard the Second ended the insurrection.

The 17th century saw many more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and executed countless suspected exponents of witchcraft.

Across the generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became an important industrial town in the 19th Cent, making such goods as steam engines, electrical engineering products, wirelesses, traction engines and ballbearings. Its significance in light industry caused it to be a target for bombing during WW2, and it was hit on several occasions.

The train found its way to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity for the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done approximately 45 yrs earlier (1797), at which time it connected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, allowing vessels to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went through a time of decline in the 1980's, since a high percentage of its industry closed down, even so it remains a thriving and expanding town today, predominantly due to the closeness to the city of london, and the first rate rail and road connections.

The town lies close to the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it's approximately 26 km from Colchester and about thirty-two mls from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
