Essex's county town, Chelmsford is set upon the rivers Can and Chelmer, roughly 32 mls from the city of London. The town has a population of roughly one hundred and eleven thousand occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

It is an early town which was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was changed into a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The location of long past Bronze Age and Neolithic encampments, the town was later the location of a Roman fortress in about the first century AD, and the settlement which grew up surrounding the fortification was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . An Anglo Saxon encampment came after the decline of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was recognized as Celmeresfort, however by the year 1199 it had taken on its present-day identity of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th century, it became the county town of Essex and in addition became seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent many of the inhabitants of the town were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the instigators were consequently hung in the town after Richard II ended the uprising.

The 17th century witnessed more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and hanged countless suspected exponents of witchcraft.

Over the years a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford developed into an important manufacturing town in the 19th century, making such products as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its significance in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a target of bombing during World War 2, and it was struck on a few occasions.

The train arrived at Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence to the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 yrs before (1797), at which time it interconnected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, making it possible for watercraft to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town moved into some decline in the 1980's, simply because much of its industry shut down, though it remains a successful and blooming town today, primarily because of its proximity to the city of london, and its first class rail and road connections.
