An Anglo Saxon encampment came after the demise of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, whilst 100 years later it was being referred to by its contemporary name of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th century, it became the county town of Essex and in addition became seat of the local assize. During the 14th century some of the residents of Chelmsford participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the instigators were accordingly hung in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the uprising.

For many years a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford became an important manufacturing town during the 19th C, manufacturing such products as steam engines, electrical engineering products, wirelesses, traction engines and ballbearings. Its significance in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a bombing target in World War 2, and it was successfully hit on a number of occasions.

The railway arrived in the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity to the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some forty five years earlier (1797), at which time it connected the town with the Blackwater estuary, enabling craft to access the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into serious decline in the nineteen-eighties, as a high percentage of its industry ceased to be profitable, though it is still a flourishing and expanding town today, largely due to the closeness to the city of london, plus its outstanding road and rail communications.
