The county town of Essex, Chelmsford can be found upon the rivers Can and Chelmer, approximately 32 miles from the city of London. Chelmsford has a population of approximately 111,500 people, while the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

It is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin was named a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The location of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic encampments, the town was later on the location of a Roman fort in approximately the first century AD, and the encampment which grew up in the vicinity of the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon camp succeeded the end of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was noted as Celmeresfort, although by1189 it had taken on its present-day name of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th C, it took on the title of county town of Essex and also became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent many of the people of Chelmsford became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the leading agitators were consequently executed in the town after the uprising was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th Cent saw even more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and put to death many alleged exponents of witchcraft.

Across the centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed in to a significant manufacturing town in the 19th C, making goods such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its significance in light industrial engineering caused it to be a bombing target during WW2, and it was hit many times.

The railway line found its way to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity for the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some about 45 yrs before (1797), when it linked Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, which made it possible for ships to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went through some decline during the nineteen-eighties, mainly because a good deal of its manufacturing facilities closed, even so it continues to be a successful and booming town today, mostly due to the proximity to London, plus the excellent rail and road connections.

Chelmsford stands adjacent to the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it is some twenty six km from Colchester and about 51 kilometres from the centre of London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
