Essex's county town, Chelmsford sits upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, around thirty two mls from the city of London. Chelmsford boasts a population of about 111,000 people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

It is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The location of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, Chelmsford was later the site of a Roman fortress in roughly 60 AD, and the community that grew up in the locality of the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon community superseded the decline of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was listed as Celmeresfort, however by the year 1199 it had taken on its current title of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and moreover became the seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century many of the inhabitants of the town were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the agitators were consequently put to death in the town after Richard II ended the uprising.

The 17th Cent saw many more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and hanged numerous presumed witches.

For many centuries a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford evolved into a major industrial town in the nineteenth century, making items such as steam engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products, traction engines and ballbearings. Its import in light industry resulted in its being a target of bombing during the Second World War, and it was successfully struck on several occasions.

The railway came to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence to the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done about forty five yrs before (1797), when it interconnected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, allowing ships to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

The town entered some decline during the 1980's, as a lot of its manufacturers shut down, all the same it still is a flourishing and expanding town today, primarily due to its nearness to the capital, and its first class road and rail communications.

The town is set near the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it is some sixteen miles car journey from Colchester and about thirty-two miles from the centre of the capital. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
