The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is situated on the rivers Chelmer and Can, some 32 mls from the city of London. The town has a population of about one hundred and eleven thousand residents, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fort in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford History: The location of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, Chelmsford was later on the site of a Roman fortification in roughly AD 60, and the commune that developed in the vicinity of the fortress was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon camp followed the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, although 100 years later it was being referred to by its current name of Chelmsford.

During the 13th C, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and in addition became seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century a number of the inhabitants of Chelmsford became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the instigators were consequently hung in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the revolt.

The 17th Cent saw more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and executed numerous alleged witches.

Over the generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned in to an important industrial town during the 19th C, producing such goods as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its import in light industrial engineering caused it to be a target for bombing during WW2, and it was successfully struck on a number of occasions.

The railway found its way to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity to the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some 45 yrs earlier (1797), at which time it joined the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, letting vessels to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went into considerable decline in the nineteen-eighties, mainly because a high percentage of its industry closed, even so it is still a successful and developing town today, mainly due to its nearness to the capital, and the superb road and rail connections.

Chelmsford stands adjacent to the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it is around sixteen mls from Colchester and about thirty-two miles from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
