Essex's county town, Chelmsford lies upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, some 32 miles from the heart of London. Chelmsford boasts a population of some one hundred and eleven thousand occupants, while the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

It is an old town which was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin was changed into a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford History: The site of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, the town was subsequently the site of a Roman fort in about 60 AD, and the community which grew up in the area of the fortress was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon settlement came after the demise of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was registered as Celmeresfort, although by1189 it had become known by its present-day name of Chelmsford.

During the 13th C, it became the county town of Essex and moreover became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th C a number of the occupants of Chelmsford participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the instigators were ultimately hung in Chelmsford after the insurrection was ended by Richard II.

The 17th C saw many more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and hanged numerous suspected exponents of witchcraft.

Throughout the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned into a substantial manufacturing town during the 19th C, manufacturing goods such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its import in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a target of bombing in WW2, and it was successfully struck quite a few times.

The railway found its way to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence for the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some forty five yrs before (1797), at which time it joined the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, letting vessels to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went through a time of decline during the nineteen-eighties, mainly because much of its industrial facilities shut down, though it continues to be a thriving and blooming town today, predominantly because of its close proximity to the city of london, and its superb road and rail communications.
