A Saxon camp followed the demise of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, nonetheless by the year 1199 being called by its modern title of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. In the 14th C many of the residents of the town took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a few of the agitators were consequently hung in the town after Richard the Second ended the rebellion.

The 17th Cent saw more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and put to death many presumed witches.

Over the centuries a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford turned in to a major manufacturing town during the 19th C, crafting such goods as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its importance in light industrial engineering caused it to be a bombing target in WW2, and it was struck on several occasions.

The railway line arrived in the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity for the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some 45 years before (1797), at which time it connected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, encouraging watercraft to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

The town moved into some decline during the 1980's, mainly because a good deal of its industry shut down, though it continues to be a successful and growing town today, primarily due to the close proximity to London, plus its exceptional rail and road communications.

The town sits close to the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it is approximately 16 mls drive from Colchester and about thirty-two miles from the centre of the capital. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
