River Chelmer - - 411097The Historical Past of Chelmsford: The location of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, Chelmsford was subsequently the location of a Roman fort in around 60 AD, and the community which developed surrounding the fort was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon camp came after the decline of Roman control in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was listed as Celmeresfort, though by the year 1199 it was being referred to by its modern name of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th Cent, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and furthermore became seat of the local assize. In the 14th C a number of the inhabitants of Chelmsford participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the leading agitators were subsequently hung in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the rebellion.

The 17th century saw yet more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and executed numerous assumed witches.

For several generations a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford evolved into a significant manufacturing town in the 19th Cent, producing such products as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its import in light industrial engineering led to its being a target for bombing in WW2, and it was hit many times.

The train arrived in the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity for the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did approximately 45 years before (1797), at which time it linked Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, enabling watercraft to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford got into considerable decline in the 1980's, mainly because a good deal of its manufacturing facilities closed, though it continues to be a thriving and developing town today, for the most part due to its close proximity to the capital, plus the superb road and rail communications.
