Essex's county town, Chelmsford is located upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, some 32 miles from the heart of London. The town boasts a populace of roughly one hundred and eleven thousand residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

It is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford History: The site of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, Chelmsford was subsequently the location of a Roman fort in around 60 AD, and the encampment that grew up in the area of the fort was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . A Saxon encampment succeeded the decline of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, however by the year 1199 being called by its contemporary identity of Chelmsford.

In the 13th century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and also became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent some of the occupants of Chelmsford took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the leading agitators were ultimately executed in the town after Richard the Second ended the rebellion.

The seventeenth century witnessed even more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and put to death numerous alleged witches.

For several generations a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford evolved into a considerable industrial town in the 19th C, producing such goods as steam engines, traction engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products and ballbearings. Its import in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a target of bombing during the Second World War, and it was struck on several occasions.

The railway came to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence to the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 years earlier (1797), when it connected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, helping vessels to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went into a time of decline during the 1980's, because a lot of its industry closed, even so it is still a flourishing and growing town today, principally due to the proximity to the capital, and its first class road and rail communications.
