The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is situated upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, some thirty two miles from the city of London. Chelmsford has a populace of approximately one hundred and eleven thousand residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

It is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The site of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, Chelmsford was later the location of a Roman fortress in about the first century AD, and the community that expanded around the fortress was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon settlement succeeded the demise of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, although by1189 it had taken on its present identity of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th Cent, it took on the title of county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century a number of the people of Chelmsford became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the main instigators were subsequently put to death in the town after the uprising was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th Cent witnessed more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and hanged many presumed witches.

Throughout the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed in to a major industrial town in the 19th Cent, crafting items such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its import in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a target for bombing in the Second World War, and it was hit on a few occasions.

The train arrived at the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity to the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five years before (1797), when it interconnected the town with the Blackwater estuary, making it possible for vessels to access the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford entered a period of decline during the 1980's, because a high percentage of its industry shut down, though it remains a flourishing and blooming town today, primarily due to its closeness to the city of london, and the first rate road and rail links.
