Essex's county town, Chelmsford is positioned on the rivers Chelmer and Can, about thirty two mls from the heart of London. The town has got a population of roughly 111,000 inhabitants, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was changed into a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - - 411097The Historical Past of Chelmsford: The location of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic encampments, the town was later on the site of a Roman fortification in about AD 60, and the village that grew up around the fortress was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon settlement followed after the end of Roman control in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, whilst 100 years later being called by its current title of Chelmsford.

During the thirteenth century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and moreover became seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent some of the occupants of Chelmsford were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the main agitators were later executed in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the uprising.

The seventeenth century saw many more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and put to death numerous presumed witches.

Over the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned into a serious industrial town during the nineteenth century, making products such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its importance in light industry resulted in its being a bombing target during WW2, and it was hit on a few occasions.

The railway arrived in the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence to the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some roughly forty five yrs earlier (1797), at which time it connected the town with the Blackwater estuary, making it possible for craft to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went through some decline in the 1980's, when much of its industry closed down, though it still is a thriving and growing town today, for the most part due to the proximity to the city of london, plus its quality road and rail communications.
