Essex's county town, Chelmsford is located upon the rivers Can and Chelmer, roughly 32 mls from central London. Chelmsford has a population of roughly 110,000 occupants, while the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

Chelmsford is an early town which was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historical Past of Chelmsford: The location of early Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, Chelmsford was later the location of a Roman fortification in about AD 60, and the village that developed round the fortification was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . A Saxon camp came after the downfall of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was noted as Celmeresfort, whilst by1189 being called by its contemporary identity of Chelmsford.

During the thirteenth century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex plus became seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent many of the people of Chelmsford took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the leading agitators were subsequently put to death in the town after Richard the Second ended the rebellion.

The 17th century witnessed many more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and hanged many assumed exponents of witchcraft.

Across the centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved into a considerable manufacturing town in the 19th C, manufacturing such goods as ball bearings, agricultural machinery, traction engines, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its importance in light industry led to its being a bombing target during World War 2, and it was hit on a number of occasions.

The railway line arrived in Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence to the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some 45 years before (1797), when it linked Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, enabling boats to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went into a time of decline in the nineteen-eighties, because a high percentage of its industry ceased to be profitable, yet it continues to be a thriving and developing town today, predominantly due to the nearness to London, plus its excellent road and rail connections.
