A Saxon encampment came after the demise of Roman control in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, nonetheless by the year 1199 it was being referred to by its current identity of Chelmsford.

At the time of the thirteenth century, it took on the title of county town of Essex plus became seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century some of the occupants of the town participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the leading agitators were thereafter hung in the town after the rebellion was ended by Richard II.

Over the years a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford became a major manufacturing town in the 19th Cent, producing products such as steam engines, electrical engineering products, wirelesses, traction engines and ballbearings. Its import in light industrial engineering caused it to be a target of bombing during WWII, and it was successfully hit on a few occasions.

The train arrived at the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence to the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did about forty five years before (1797), at which time it connected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, which enabled ships to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went into a time of decline during the 1980's, simply because a good deal of its industry went bust, though it remains a thriving and expanding town today, mainly due to its nearness to the capital, plus its exceptional rail and road links.
