The county town of Essex, Chelmsford sits on the rivers Can and Chelmer, roughly thirty two miles from the city of London. The town has a population of roughly one hundred and eleven thousand inhabitants, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

It is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fort in around 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin got the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The site of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, Chelmsford was later the site of a Roman fort in approximately the first century AD, and the community which grew up in the vicinity of the fort was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . An Anglo Saxon settlement succeeded the demise of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was described as Celmeresfort, even though by1189 being called by its contemporary identity of Chelmsford.

In the 13th Cent, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and also became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent some of the residents of the town were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the leading culprits were later put to death in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the revolt.

The seventeenth century saw even more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and hanged numerous supposed witches.

Through the centuries a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford turned in to a major industrial town during the 19th century, making such items as ball bearings, agricultural machinery, traction engines, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its importance in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a bombing target during WW2, and it was struck a few times.

The railway line came to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence for the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some 45 years earlier (1797), at which time it connected the town with the Blackwater estuary, allowing craft to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

The town got into some decline during the 1980's, mainly because much of its industry closed down, though it continues to be a flourishing and blooming town today, mainly due to its proximity to the capital, and its outstanding rail and road connections.

The town sits close to the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it's approximately twenty six kilometers drive from Colchester and about 32 mls from the centre of the capital. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
