A Saxon settlement superseded the downfall of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was noted as Celmeresfort, though one hundred years later it had taken on its modern identity of Chelmsford.

Its import in light industry resulted in its being a bombing target in WW2, and it was hit on a few occasions.

The train arrived at the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence to the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some about forty five years earlier (1797), at which time it joined Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, making it possible for ships to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went into substantial decline during the nineteen-eighties, simply because a lot of its plants closed down, nevertheless it remains a flourishing and blooming town today, predominantly because of its proximity to the city of london, and its first rate rail and road connections.
