The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is set on the Chelmer and Can rivers, a car journey of around 32 mls from the city of London. Chelmsford has a population of approximately 110,000 occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

It is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The site of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic encampments, Chelmsford was later the location of a Roman fortification in around AD 60, and the encampment that expanded in the area of the fortification was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon settlement came after the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was recorded as Celmeresfort, nonetheless by1189 it had taken on its contemporary name of Chelmsford.

In the 13th century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and furthermore became seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century many of the locals of Chelmsford became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, several of the agitators were thereafter executed in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the uprising.

The 17th Cent saw many more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and executed numerous supposed witches.

Across the years a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford became an important manufacturing town during the 19th Cent, crafting such items as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its significance in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a target for bombing in the Second World War, and it was successfully hit on a number of occasions.

The railway line came to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity to the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did roughly 45 yrs earlier (1797), at which time it joined Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, which allowed watercraft to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town got into some decline in the nineteen-eighties, mainly because a lot of its factories closed, even so it remains a successful and expanding town today, mainly due to the close proximity to the city of london, and its superb road and rail connections.

The town is situated adjacent to the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it's around 16 mls drive from Colchester and about 51 kms from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
