The railway came to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence to the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 yrs earlier (1797), when it linked the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, making it possible for vessels to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford entered a time of decline in the nineteen-eighties, since much of its manufacturers closed down, even so it is still a thriving and developing town today, mainly because of its nearness to London, and the excellent rail and road communications.
