The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is located on the Can and Chelmer rivers, some 32 mls from central London. Chelmsford boasts a populace of approximately one hundred and eleven thousand residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was changed into a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

An Anglo Saxon camp superseded the end of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, however one hundred years later being called by its modern title of Chelmsford.

At the time of the thirteenth century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. During the 14th C a number of the inhabitants of Chelmsford were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the ringleaders were later hung in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the revolt.

The 17th C witnessed yet more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and put to death many assumed witches.

Through the generations a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford evolved in to a vital industrial town in the 19th century, manufacturing such products as steam engines, electrical engineering products, wirelesses, traction engines and ballbearings. The railway came to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity for the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did around 45 yrs before (1797), when it joined Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, letting boats to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went through some decline during the nineteen-eighties, when much of its industry went bust, all the same it remains a successful and growing town today, mainly due to its proximity to the capital, and the outstanding rail and road links.
