The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is located upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, a car journey of approximately 32 mls from the city of London. Chelmsford has got a population of approximately 111,500 people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,300.

It is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church was named a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford History: The location of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic encampments, Chelmsford was later the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD, and the encampment which grew up in the area of the fort was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . An Anglo Saxon community succeeded the demise of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, whilst by1189 it had taken on its modern identity of Chelmsford.

During the 13th century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and in addition became seat of the local assize. In the 14th C many of the residents of the town took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a few of the leading agitators were ultimately hung in Chelmsford after the insurrection was ended by Richard II.

The 17th century saw more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and hanged many supposed exponents of witchcraft.
