Essex's county town, Chelmsford is set on the rivers Chelmer and Can, some thirty two miles from the centre of London. Chelmsford boasts a population of around 111,000 people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The location of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, the town was subsequently the site of a Roman fort in roughly 60 AD, and the town that developed around the fortification was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . A Saxon encampment superseded the demise of Roman control in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, although by1189 it had become known by its current identity of Chelmsford.

In the 13th C, it became the county town of Essex and also became the seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century some of the occupants of the town took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a few of the instigators were accordingly hung in Chelmsford after the insurrection was ended by Richard II.

The 17th century witnessed lots more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and put to death many assumed exponents of witchcraft.

For several centuries a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford turned in to a substantial industrial town in the 19th C, producing products such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its significance in light industry caused it to be a target for bombing during WW2, and it was hit on a few occasions.

The railway line arrived at the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence for the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done approximately 45 yrs before (1797), at which time it joined the town with the Blackwater estuary, allowing craft to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into a period of decline during the nineteen-eighties, simply because a good deal of its industry closed down, but it still is a successful and developing town today, principally due to its proximity to the capital, and its first rate road and rail connections.

Chelmsford stands just off the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it's some 16 miles drive from Colchester and about 32 miles from the centre of the capital. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
