The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is situated on the Can and Chelmer rivers, some thirty two miles from the heart of London. The town has a populace of about 111,000 people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

It is an old town that was the location of a Roman fort in around 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.
