Essex's county town, Chelmsford can be found on the Can and Chelmer rivers, some 32 miles from the heart of London. Chelmsford boasts a population of about 111,000 inhabitants, while the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church became a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The site of long past Bronze Age and Neolithic encampments, the town was later the location of a Roman fort in about the first century AD, and the town which grew up around the fort was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . An Anglo Saxon encampment followed the demise of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was listed as Celmeresfort, however 100 years later being called by its present title of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex plus became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th century some of the locals of Chelmsford participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, several of the ringleaders were consequently put to death in the town after Richard II ended the uprising.

The seventeenth century witnessed even more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and executed countless alleged exponents of witchcraft.

Across the years a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford turned into a substantial industrial town in the nineteenth century, crafting such items as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its import in light industrial engineering caused it to be a target for bombing during WW2, and it was successfully struck on a number of occasions.

The railway line arrived in the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity for the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 yrs before (1797), when it interconnected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, which enabled craft to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

The town got into a period of decline during the 1980's, when a high percentage of its factories ceased to be profitable, even so it continues to be a successful and growing town today, predominantly due to its close proximity to the capital, and the first rate road and rail links.

The town is situated close to the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it is roughly twenty six km driving distance from Colchester and about fifty-one kilometres from central London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
