The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is set upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, some 32 miles from the centre of London. The town has a population of about 111,500 residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

It is an early town that was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

An Anglo Saxon settlement followed after the decline of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was registered as Celmeresfort, even though 100 years later it had become known by its modern name of Chelmsford.

In the thirteenth century, it became the county town of Essex and additionally became seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent a number of the people of the town became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the ringleaders were accordingly hung in the town after the revolt was ended by Richard II.

The 17th century saw many more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and put to death numerous assumed witches.

Across the centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved into a major manufacturing town during the 19th Cent, crafting such goods as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its import in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a bombing target in WW2, and it was successfully hit several times.
