River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The site of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, Chelmsford was later the site of a Roman fort in roughly AD 60, and the community which grew up round the fort was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon encampment followed the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, even though by1189 it had taken on its current identity of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th Cent, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and in addition became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th century some of the locals of the town were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the main instigators were consequently hung in the town after Richard the Second ended the insurrection.

The 17th C saw yet more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and hanged numerous assumed witches.

Over the centuries a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford evolved into an important manufacturing town during the nineteenth century, making products such as ball bearings, traction engines, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its significance in light industrial engineering caused it to be a bombing target in the Second World War, and it was hit quite a few times.

The railway line arrived in the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some forty five years earlier (1797), at which time it connected the town with the Blackwater estuary, making it possible for watercraft to access the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford entered considerable decline during the 1980's, because a lot of its production facilities closed, in spite of this it still is a flourishing and developing town today, largely because of its proximity to the capital, and the terrific road and rail connections.
