The railway arrived at Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity for the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five years before (1797), when it joined the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, allowing ships to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford moved into a time of decline during the 1980's, when a lot of its industry ceased to be profitable, even so it is still a flourishing and growing town today, mostly due to the closeness to the capital, and its exceptional road and rail communications.
