The county town of Essex, Chelmsford lies on the rivers Chelmer and Can, some 32 miles from central London. The town has a populace of roughly 111,000 occupants, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was named a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The location of early Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, the town was later on the site of a Roman fort in roughly AD 60, and the community that grew up around the fortress was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . A Saxon community succeeded the decline of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was noted as Celmeresfort, whilst 100 years later it had become known by its present-day identity of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th Cent, it became the county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent a number of the locals of Chelmsford were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the agitators were thereafter hung in the town after Richard the Second ended the insurrection.

The seventeenth century witnessed yet more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and hanged numerous supposed witches.

Through the centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed into a considerable industrial town in the 19th C, crafting such goods as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its significance in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a bombing target in the Second World War, and it was successfully struck quite a few times.

The train found its way to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity for the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 years before (1797), when it joined the town with the Blackwater estuary, making it possible for ships to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went through a period of decline during the 1980's, mainly because a lot of its industries went bust, even so it remains a thriving and growing town today, mainly due to the proximity to London, and its good road and rail links.
