The county town of Essex, Chelmsford can be found upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, about 32 miles from central London. Chelmsford boasts a populace of about 111,000 people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The site of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, the town was later the location of a Roman fortification in around AD 60, and the village that developed in the locality of the fort was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon community superseded the end of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, though by1189 it had become known by its present title of Chelmsford.

During the 13th C, it took on the title of county town of Essex and moreover became seat of the local assize. In the 14th century some of the locals of the town became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a few of the main instigators were thereafter executed in the town after the revolt was ended by Richard the Second.

The seventeenth century saw more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and put to death countless suspected exponents of witchcraft.

Throughout the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned in to a serious industrial town in the 19th C, manufacturing items such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its importance in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a target of bombing in World War 2, and it was successfully hit on a number of occasions.

The railway came to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence for the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some 45 yrs earlier (1797), at which time it interconnected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, making it possible for boats to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into a time of decline during the nineteen-eighties, because much of its factories closed down, in spite of this it is still a successful and growing town today, for the most part due to the close proximity to the city of london, plus the first class road and rail connections.

Chelmsford is set near the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it is about sixteen mls drive from Colchester and about thirty-two miles from central London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
