Essex's county town, Chelmsford is set on the Can and Chelmer rivers, some thirty two mls from the heart of London. Chelmsford boasts a populace of approximately 110,000 residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,300.

It is an early town that was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church was named a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The site of early Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, Chelmsford was later the location of a Roman fort in approximately the first century AD, and the commune that expanded round the fortification was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . An Anglo Saxon community followed the demise of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, whilst by1189 being called by its present-day identity of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th C, it took on the title of county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. During the 14th century many of the citizens of Chelmsford became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the instigators were later executed in the town after Richard the Second ended the uprising.

The 17th Cent saw even more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and put to death numerous alleged exponents of witchcraft.

Across the generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved in to a substantial industrial town in the 19th Cent, manufacturing items such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its significance in light industry led to its being a target for bombing during the Second World War, and it was struck a few times.

The railway line found its way to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some approximately 45 years earlier (1797), at which time it connected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, allowing craft to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford entered substantial decline during the 1980's, because much of its industry closed down, though it remains a successful and blooming town today, for the most part due to the nearness to London, plus the first class rail and road connections.
