The county town of Essex, Chelmsford can be found upon the rivers Can and Chelmer, approximately thirty two miles from the city of London. The town has a populace of roughly 110,000 inhabitants, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

It is an age-old town which was the location of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was named a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historical Past of Chelmsford: The site of early Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, the town was later on the location of a Roman fortification in around AD 60, and the village which developed around the fortress was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon encampment came after the demise of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was recorded as Celmeresfort, whilst by the year 1199 it had become known by its contemporary name of Chelmsford.

In the 13th C, it took on the title of county town of Essex and additionally became seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent a number of the residents of Chelmsford became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the leading culprits were thereafter executed in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the insurrection.

The seventeenth century witnessed yet more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and hanged countless supposed witches.

Over the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed into a major industrial town during the nineteenth century, manufacturing items such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its significance in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a bombing target in WW2, and it was hit quite a few times.

The train found its way to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some forty five yrs earlier (1797), when it linked Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, encouraging watercraft to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town got into a period of decline during the 1980's, because a good deal of its industry closed down, even so it remains a thriving and expanding town today, mostly due to the close proximity to the city of london, plus its good road and rail links.

The town is positioned close to the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it is roughly 16 miles drive from Colchester and about fifty-one kms from the centre of the capital. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
