Essex's county town, Chelmsford can be found upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, some thirty two mls from the centre of London. The town has a population of roughly 111,000 people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,300.

Chelmsford is an age-old town that was the location of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was named a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The site of long past Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, the town was later on the site of a Roman fortress in roughly AD 60, and the encampment that developed around the fortress was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . A Saxon camp came after the demise of the Romans in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was recorded as Celmeresfort, although by1189 it had become known by its contemporary title of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th Cent, it took on the title of county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. During the 14th C some of the occupants of Chelmsford became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the main culprits were subsequently put to death in the town after the uprising was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th C witnessed many more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and executed numerous assumed witches.

For several generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved into a major manufacturing town during the 19th C, producing such products as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its importance in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a bombing target during WWII, and it was hit a few times.

The railway came to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence to the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 years before (1797), at which time it joined Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, which made it possible for watercraft to access the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went into a time of decline during the nineteen-eighties, mainly because a high percentage of its plants ceased to be profitable, even so it is still a flourishing and booming town today, mostly due to the proximity to the city of london, plus the first class road and rail connections.

The town sits beside the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it's about 26 kilometers driving distance from Colchester and about 51 kilometers from central London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
