Essex's county town, Chelmsford is located upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, a car journey of approximately 32 mls from the heart of London. Chelmsford has a populace of about 110,000 occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

It is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was named a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The location of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, Chelmsford was later the site of a Roman fort in about AD 60, and the town that grew up surrounding the fortification was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon camp followed after the demise of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was recognized as Celmeresfort, whilst by the year 1199 being called by its present-day identity of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th C, it became the county town of Essex and additionally became the seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century a number of the inhabitants of Chelmsford were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a few of the ringleaders were accordingly executed in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the insurrection.

The 17th C saw lots more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and hanged numerous assumed witches.

Chelmsford got into a time of decline during the 1980's, because much of its industry ceased to be profitable, even so it remains a thriving and developing town today, for the most part due to the proximity to the capital, and its quality road and rail connections.
