Essex's county town, Chelmsford stands on the Chelmer and Can rivers, approximately thirty two miles from the heart of London. The town has got a population of some one hundred and eleven thousand inhabitants, while the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

It is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin became a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford History: The site of early Bronze Age and Neolithic encampments, the town was later the site of a Roman fort in roughly 60 AD, and the village that expanded around the fortification was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . An Anglo Saxon encampment followed the decline of Roman control in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was noted as Celmeresfort, whilst by1189 it was being referred to by its present title of Chelmsford.

In the 13th century, it became the county town of Essex and additionally became seat of the local assize. During the 14th C a number of the citizens of Chelmsford took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the agitators were accordingly executed in Chelmsford after the rebellion was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th century witnessed even more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and executed many presumed exponents of witchcraft.

For several years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved in to a considerable manufacturing town in the nineteenth century, manufacturing such goods as steam engines, traction engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products and ballbearings. Its prominence in light industrial engineering led to its being a bombing target in World War 2, and it was successfully struck on several occasions.

The train found its way to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity to the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did approximately 45 yrs before (1797), when it joined Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, which enabled boats to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford got into a time of decline in the 1980's, simply because a lot of its industry ceased to be profitable, even so it remains a flourishing and growing town today, mainly due to the close proximity to the capital, plus the terrific road and rail communications.

Chelmsford stands adjacent to the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it's roughly twenty six km driving distance from Colchester and about 51 km from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
