A Saxon encampment succeeded the demise of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was recorded as Celmeresfort, though one hundred years later being called by its current name of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and additionally became the seat of the local assize. Through the centuries a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford developed in to a substantial manufacturing town in the 19th Cent, producing such items as steam engines, traction engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products and ballbearings. Its significance in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a target of bombing during World War 2, and it was struck on a number of occasions.

The railway line found its way to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence to the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 years before (1797), at which time it interconnected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, which made it possible for ships to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

The town got into serious decline during the 1980's, as a high percentage of its industry went bust, in spite of this it is still a flourishing and expanding town today, principally due to its nearness to the city of london, and its good road and rail communications.
