The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is found on the rivers Chelmer and Can, some 32 miles from the city of London. The town has got a population of around 110,000 inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

Chelmsford is an early town which was the location of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford History: The site of early Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, the town was subsequently the site of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD, and the encampment which expanded surrounding the fortress was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon camp superseded the demise of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, although by1189 it was being referred to by its present-day name of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th C, it took on the title of county town of Essex and moreover became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent some of the people of Chelmsford became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the leading instigators were subsequently hung in the town after Richard II ended the insurrection.

The 17th Cent witnessed more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and hanged numerous alleged exponents of witchcraft.

Across the centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned into a considerable manufacturing town in the 19th Cent, crafting such items as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its import in light industry led to its being a bombing target during World War 2, and it was successfully hit on a number of occasions.

The railway found its way to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity to the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five years earlier (1797), at which time it linked Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, letting ships to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went through a period of decline in the 1980's, because a good deal of its industry went bust, though it is still a flourishing and booming town today, largely due to the close proximity to the city of london, plus the first class road and rail connections.

The town can be found close to the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it is around sixteen mls car journey from Colchester and about thirty-two mls from central London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
