The county town of Essex, Chelmsford stands on the rivers Chelmer and Can, a drive of about thirty two miles from the heart of London. The town has got a population of roughly 111,000 people, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fort in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church was changed into a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The site of early Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, Chelmsford was later on the location of a Roman fortress in approximately the first century AD, and the encampment that grew up surrounding the fortress was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . A Saxon settlement superseded the demise of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was recognized as Celmeresfort, although by1189 it had become known by its modern title of Chelmsford.

At the time of the thirteenth century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and in addition became seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent a number of the inhabitants of the town became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the agitators were thereafter hung in the town after Richard the Second ended the insurrection.

The 17th century saw lots more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and executed numerous suspected exponents of witchcraft.

Across the centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned in to a major manufacturing town in the nineteenth century, manufacturing goods such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its prominence in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a target for bombing in WW2, and it was successfully hit many times.

The railway line arrived in the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity for the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did roughly 45 years before (1797), when it interconnected the town with the Blackwater estuary, encouraging ships to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town got into serious decline during the 1980's, mainly because a lot of its industry closed down, though it is still a flourishing and blooming town today, mostly due to the nearness to London, and its outstanding rail and road communications.

The town can be found close to the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it is around 26 km drive from Colchester and about fifty-one kms from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
