The county town of Essex, Chelmsford sits upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, around thirty two mls from the heart of London. Chelmsford has a populace of roughly one hundred and eleven thousand residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,300.

It is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

A Saxon camp followed after the demise of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was noted as Celmeresfort, though 100 years later being called by its modern title of Chelmsford.

During the 13th C, it became the county town of Essex and additionally became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th C a number of the occupants of Chelmsford participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the agitators were ultimately hung in Chelmsford after the revolt was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th C witnessed more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and executed many presumed exponents of witchcraft.

For many centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned into a substantial manufacturing town in the 19th century, producing goods such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its prominence in light industry resulted in its being a target of bombing during WW2, and it was struck on a few occasions.

The railway found its way to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence for the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some forty five years earlier (1797), at which time it linked the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, allowing watercraft to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford entered some decline in the 1980's, because a good deal of its industry ceased to be profitable, nonetheless it still is a thriving and growing town today, primarily due to its closeness to London, plus the terrific rail and road links.
