River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford History: The location of long past Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, the town was later the site of a Roman fortification in roughly the 1st century AD, and the community which grew up round the fortification was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon encampment followed after the downfall of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, although by the year 1199 it had taken on its present title of Chelmsford.

During the 13th century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and additionally became the seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century a number of the people of the town became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the instigators were later hung in Chelmsford after the revolt was ended by Richard II.

The seventeenth century saw more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and executed numerous suspected exponents of witchcraft.

Over the years a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford evolved into an important manufacturing town in the 19th Cent, manufacturing products such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its import in light industry caused it to be a bombing target during the Second World War, and it was hit on a few occasions.

The railway line came to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity to the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 years earlier (1797), at which time it linked the town with the Blackwater estuary, making it possible for boats to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went through significant decline in the nineteen-eighties, as a good deal of its manufacturing plants went bust, though it still is a successful and expanding town today, largely due to the close proximity to the capital, and the terrific road and rail connections.
