The county town of Essex, Chelmsford lies on the Chelmer and Can rivers, approximately thirty two mls from the city of London. The town has a population of around 111,500 residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford History: The location of early Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, Chelmsford was later the location of a Roman fortress in around AD 60, and the encampment which grew up in the area of the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon settlement followed after the decline of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, whilst by the year 1199 it had taken on its modern identity of Chelmsford.

During the 13th Cent, it took on the title of county town of Essex and in addition became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th century a number of the occupants of the town took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the leading agitators were subsequently executed in the town after Richard the Second ended the revolt.

The 17th C saw many more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and executed numerous supposed witches.

Over the generations a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford evolved in to a substantial industrial town during the 19th century, making items such as steam engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products, traction engines and ballbearings. Its significance in light industrial engineering caused it to be a bombing target during WWII, and it was successfully struck on a number of occasions.

The railway arrived in Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity for the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done roughly forty five years before (1797), when it interconnected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, which enabled ships to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town entered serious decline in the 1980's, as much of its industrial facilities closed, even so it remains a flourishing and developing town today, predominantly due to its closeness to London, plus its superb road and rail links.

The town sits just off the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it's approximately 16 mls driving distance from Colchester and about 51 kilometers from central London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
