The railway arrived at the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity for the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did about 45 years before (1797), when it joined Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, helping craft to access the centre of town from the open sea.

The town got into a time of decline during the nineteen-eighties, mainly because much of its industry closed, though it is still a flourishing and blooming town today, for the most part because of its closeness to London, and its outstanding road and rail communications.
