Its importance in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a target for bombing in World War 2, and it was struck a few times.

The train came to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence for the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done about forty five years before (1797), when it joined the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, allowing boats to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

The town entered some decline in the nineteen-eighties, simply because a good deal of its industries shut down, even so it is still a successful and developing town today, mainly due to its close proximity to London, plus the superb road and rail links.
