The county town of Essex, Chelmsford stands upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, a drive of roughly 32 miles from central London. The town boasts a population of approximately 110,000 occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church became a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historical Past of Chelmsford: The site of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, Chelmsford was subsequently the location of a Roman fortress in around the first century AD, and the encampment which evolved round the fortification was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon settlement followed after the downfall of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, even though by1189 it had become known by its present-day identity of Chelmsford.

During the 13th Cent, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and in addition became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th century a number of the occupants of Chelmsford became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the agitators were later executed in the town after Richard II ended the revolt.

The 17th C saw yet more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and hanged countless suspected witches.

For many years a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford turned in to a substantial industrial town during the 19th century, making such goods as steam engines, traction engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products and ballbearings. Its prominence in light industry led to its being a bombing target in the Second World War, and it was struck on a number of occasions.

The train arrived at the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity to the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five yrs earlier (1797), at which time it connected the town with the Blackwater estuary, which made it possible for boats to access the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went through substantial decline during the 1980's, as a lot of its industry closed down, though it is still a successful and growing town today, primarily due to its proximity to London, and its exceptional rail and road connections.
