River Chelmer - - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The location of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic encampments, Chelmsford was later the location of a Roman fortification in around AD 60, and the encampment that evolved round the fort was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . A Saxon encampment followed after the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, although 100 years later being called by its present identity of Chelmsford.

As long ago thirteenth century, it became the county town of Essex and in addition became seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent a number of the people of the town were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the ringleaders were consequently hung in the town after the uprising was ended by Richard the Second.

The seventeenth century witnessed yet more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and put to death countless assumed exponents of witchcraft.

For several centuries a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford became a vital industrial town during the 19th C, manufacturing such products as steam engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products, traction engines and ballbearings. Its prominence in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a target of bombing during WW2, and it was hit many times.

The railway line came to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity to the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some forty five yrs earlier (1797), when it joined Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, making it possible for watercraft to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town moved into some decline in the nineteen-eighties, simply because a lot of its manufacturing facilities ceased to be profitable, though it is still a thriving and growing town today, principally due to the nearness to the city of london, and its good rail and road connections.
