The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is positioned on the Chelmer and Can rivers, some 32 miles from the city of London. The town boasts a population of around 111,000 inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin became a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The site of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic encampments, the town was subsequently the location of a Roman fort in about the 1st century AD, and the community which grew up in the locality of the fort was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon encampment superseded the downfall of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was noted as Celmeresfort, even though by the year 1199 it had become known by its current title of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th C, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and furthermore became seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent some of the citizens of Chelmsford were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the agitators were subsequently hung in Chelmsford after the revolt was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th Cent witnessed many more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and put to death countless assumed witches.

Across the years a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford developed in to a substantial manufacturing town during the 19th Cent, making goods such as steam engines, electrical engineering products, wirelesses, traction engines and ballbearings. Its import in light industrial engineering caused it to be a bombing target in WW2, and it was hit a few times.

The train found its way to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence to the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did about 45 yrs earlier (1797), at which time it joined Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, helping craft to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went through a time of decline in the nineteen-eighties, when much of its industry closed, though it still is a successful and developing town today, principally due to its close proximity to the city of london, plus the terrific road and rail connections.

Chelmsford stands near the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it is roughly 16 miles from Colchester and about thirty-two mls from the centre of the capital. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
