Essex's county town, Chelmsford lies on the Chelmer and Can rivers, a drive of around thirty two mls from the city of London. The town has got a population of some 110,000 residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

It is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin became a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The site of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, the town was later the site of a Roman fort in about 60 AD, and the settlement that evolved round the fort was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . An Anglo Saxon camp came after the demise of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was registered as Celmeresfort, even though one hundred years later it had become known by its contemporary name of Chelmsford.

In the thirteenth century, it took on the title of county town of Essex plus became seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century many of the citizens of Chelmsford became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the instigators were consequently executed in the town after Richard II ended the insurrection.

The 17th century witnessed even more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and put to death many supposed exponents of witchcraft.

For many centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became an important industrial town during the 19th C, crafting goods such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its importance in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a bombing target in World War 2, and it was struck on several occasions.

The train found its way to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity for the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did about 45 yrs before (1797), at which time it connected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, allowing vessels to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went through considerable decline in the 1980's, mainly because a lot of its industry shut down, even so it is still a thriving and expanding town today, mainly due to the proximity to London, plus the first rate rail and road communications.

Chelmsford is located close to the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it is around twenty six km driving distance from Colchester and about 32 miles from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
