Essex's county town, Chelmsford lies upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, some 32 mls from the centre of London. Chelmsford has got a population of some one hundred and eleven thousand inhabitants, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,300.

It is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was changed into a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The site of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, the town was later the location of a Roman fortification in roughly AD 60, and the encampment that grew up around the fortress was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . A Saxon camp superseded the downfall of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, though by1189 it was being referred to by its present name of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th C, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex plus became seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century a number of the citizens of Chelmsford were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a few of the agitators were later hung in Chelmsford after the revolt was ended by Richard II.

The 17th Cent witnessed more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and hanged countless alleged witches.

For several centuries a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford developed into a substantial industrial town during the 19th Cent, crafting such items as steam engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products, traction engines and ballbearings. Its prominence in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a bombing target during WWII, and it was struck on a number of occasions.

The train arrived in Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity to the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some 45 years earlier (1797), at which time it interconnected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, which enabled craft to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went through a time of decline in the 1980's, simply because a high percentage of its manufacturing facilities closed down, all the same it continues to be a thriving and expanding town today, mainly because of its close proximity to the city of london, plus its outstanding road and rail communications.

The town is found adjacent to the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it is around 26 kilometres car journey from Colchester and about thirty-two mls from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
