Essex's county town, Chelmsford is found on the rivers Can and Chelmer, about thirty two miles from the city of London. Chelmsford boasts a population of about 111,000 occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

It is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The site of long past Bronze Age and Neolithic encampments, the town was later the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD, and the community which grew up surrounding the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon settlement followed after the end of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was recorded as Celmeresfort, although 100 years later it had taken on its present-day name of Chelmsford.

At the time of the thirteenth century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century a number of the residents of Chelmsford participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the leading instigators were later hung in the town after the insurrection was ended by Richard the Second.

The seventeenth century saw lots more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and put to death numerous alleged witches.

For several centuries a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford became an important manufacturing town in the nineteenth century, making such goods as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its significance in light industry resulted in its being a bombing target during WWII, and it was hit on a number of occasions.

The train found its way to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence to the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 yrs earlier (1797), at which time it linked Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, helping watercraft to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went into considerable decline during the nineteen-eighties, mainly because much of its industry went bust, though it remains a successful and booming town today, principally due to the nearness to London, and its good rail and road links.

Chelmsford sits close to the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it is some 26 kilometers driving distance from Colchester and about fifty-one kilometres from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
