The county town of Essex, Chelmsford can be found upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, approximately 32 miles from the heart of London. Chelmsford boasts a population of about 111,500 inhabitants, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

It is an old town which was the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was named a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The location of early Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, Chelmsford was later the site of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD, and the commune that grew up in the area of the fort was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . An Anglo Saxon encampment came after the demise of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, though 100 years later it had taken on its present identity of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and in addition became seat of the local assize. In the 14th C some of the occupants of the town were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the agitators were consequently executed in the town after Richard II ended the insurrection.

The seventeenth century saw lots more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and put to death countless alleged witches.

For several centuries a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford developed in to a significant industrial town during the nineteenth century, manufacturing such products as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its prominence in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a bombing target during WW2, and it was successfully hit on a number of occasions.

The railway arrived in the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity to the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some around 45 years earlier (1797), at which time it interconnected the town with the Blackwater estuary, making it possible for watercraft to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

The town entered substantial decline during the 1980's, because a lot of its production facilities ceased to be profitable, even so it still is a successful and developing town today, for the most part because of its nearness to the capital, plus the first class rail and road communications.

The town lies close to the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it's approximately sixteen mls from Colchester and about 51 km from the centre of the capital. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
