The county town of Essex, Chelmsford sits on the rivers Can and Chelmer, some 32 mls from the city of London. The town boasts a populace of about 110,000 inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

It is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The location of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, Chelmsford was later the site of a Roman fort in around the first century AD, and the town which grew up in the locality of the fortification was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon community came after the downfall of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, however by1189 it had become known by its current name of Chelmsford.

At the time of the thirteenth century, it became the county town of Essex and also became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent a number of the citizens of Chelmsford were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the main culprits were later put to death in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the rebellion.

The 17th century witnessed lots more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and hanged countless alleged exponents of witchcraft.

For several centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed into a major manufacturing town during the 19th century, manufacturing such items as steam engines, traction engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products and ballbearings. Its import in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a bombing target in World War 2, and it was struck a few times.

The train found its way to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence to the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some forty five years earlier (1797), at which time it linked the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, making it possible for ships to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford moved into a time of decline during the 1980's, simply because a lot of its industrial facilities shut down, in spite of this it is still a successful and developing town today, largely due to its closeness to London, and the first rate road and rail communications.

The town is located beside the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it's some sixteen miles drive from Colchester and about 51 kilometres from central London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
