Essex's county town, Chelmsford sits upon the rivers Can and Chelmer, some 32 mls from central London. The town has a populace of roughly 110,000 inhabitants, while the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

It is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church was changed into a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The site of early Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, Chelmsford was later on the site of a Roman fortification in about AD 60, and the village that developed surrounding the fort was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . An Anglo Saxon community followed after the demise of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was noted as Celmeresfort, whilst 100 years later it was being referred to by its present title of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and moreover became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th C many of the occupants of Chelmsford became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the instigators were ultimately executed in the town after the revolt was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th century witnessed more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and hanged many assumed witches.

For many centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became an important manufacturing town during the 19th century, producing such items as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its importance in light industrial engineering led to its being a target for bombing during World War 2, and it was successfully struck on a number of occasions.

The train found its way to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity to the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some forty five yrs before (1797), when it interconnected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, helping vessels to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town got into a time of decline during the 1980's, when a high percentage of its industry closed down, though it continues to be a successful and blooming town today, primarily due to its nearness to London, and the superb rail and road connections.

The town stands close to the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it's approximately sixteen mls driving distance from Colchester and about thirty-two miles from central London.
