Essex's county town, Chelmsford is located on the rivers Chelmer and Can, some 32 miles from the heart of London. The town has got a population of about one hundred and eleven thousand residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church was changed into a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford History: The location of early Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, the town was later on the site of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD, and the encampment which grew up surrounding the fortress was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . An Anglo Saxon community succeeded the downfall of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was noted as Celmeresfort, though one hundred years later it was being referred to by its contemporary identity of Chelmsford.

In the 13th Cent, it became the county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. During the 14th century a number of the inhabitants of Chelmsford were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the ringleaders were later put to death in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the uprising.

The 17th Cent saw yet more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and hanged countless supposed witches.

For many generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved into a substantial manufacturing town during the 19th century, crafting such products as steam engines, electrical engineering products, wirelesses, traction engines and ballbearings. Its prominence in light industry caused it to be a bombing target during World War 2, and it was struck on a number of occasions.

The railway line arrived in the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence for the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 yrs earlier (1797), when it linked Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, allowing vessels to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into a period of decline during the 1980's, when a lot of its factories closed down, though it is still a flourishing and growing town today, for the most part due to its proximity to the city of london, and the exceptional road and rail connections.

Chelmsford is set just off the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it is approximately twenty six kilometres driving distance from Colchester and about thirty-two miles from the centre of the capital.
