The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is located on the rivers Can and Chelmer, approximately 32 miles from the city of London. The town boasts a population of around one hundred and eleven thousand people, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

It is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford History: The site of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, Chelmsford was later the location of a Roman fortification in approximately AD 60, and the community which evolved around the fort was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . A Saxon community followed after the demise of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was noted as Celmeresfort, even though by1189 it had become known by its present identity of Chelmsford.

In the thirteenth century, it became the county town of Essex and additionally became seat of the local assize. In the 14th C a number of the locals of Chelmsford were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the leading culprits were thereafter put to death in Chelmsford after the rebellion was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th century saw even more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and executed many presumed witches.

Across the generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed into a substantial industrial town during the 19th C, manufacturing goods such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its prominence in light industrial engineering led to its being a bombing target during WW2, and it was struck on a number of occasions.

The train came to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence to the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some around 45 years before (1797), when it connected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, encouraging boats to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town got into a period of decline in the 1980's, simply because a lot of its factories closed, even so it still is a thriving and growing town today, mainly due to its close proximity to the city of london, plus its terrific rail and road links.

Chelmsford is situated close to the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it's roughly sixteen mls drive from Colchester and about fifty-one kilometres from central London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
