Essex's county town, Chelmsford is set on the Chelmer and Can rivers, approximately 32 mls from the heart of London. The town boasts a populace of roughly 110,000 residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

Chelmsford is an old town which was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The site of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, the town was later on the site of a Roman fortress in roughly 60 AD, and the encampment which grew up surrounding the fortification was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . An Anglo Saxon camp followed after the decline of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was recorded as Celmeresfort, however by1189 it had taken on its modern name of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th Cent, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex plus became seat of the local assize. During the 14th C a number of the occupants of Chelmsford became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, several of the agitators were accordingly executed in Chelmsford after the insurrection was ended by Richard the Second.

The seventeenth century saw more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and hanged countless suspected exponents of witchcraft.

Over the centuries a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford developed into a major industrial town during the 19th C, manufacturing such goods as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its significance in light industry resulted in its being a target of bombing during the Second World War, and it was struck several times.

The train found its way to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence for the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done around 45 yrs earlier (1797), at which time it linked Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, which enabled craft to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town entered a period of decline in the 1980's, since a good deal of its industry closed down, even so it continues to be a flourishing and expanding town today, largely due to its proximity to London, and its superb rail and road communications.

Chelmsford is positioned beside the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it is around sixteen miles driving distance from Colchester and about 32 miles from central London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
