The county town of Essex, Chelmsford lies on the Can and Chelmer rivers, some 32 miles from central London. Chelmsford boasts a populace of approximately one hundred and eleven thousand occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

Chelmsford is an old town that was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The location of long past Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, Chelmsford was later the location of a Roman fortification in around the first century AD, and the village which grew up in the locality of the fortification was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon encampment superseded the downfall of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, although 100 years later it had taken on its present name of Chelmsford.

In the 13th century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex plus became seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century many of the residents of Chelmsford took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a few of the leading agitators were subsequently put to death in the town after the insurrection was ended by Richard II.

The seventeenth century witnessed even more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and executed countless suspected witches.

For many years a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford turned into a considerable manufacturing town during the nineteenth century, making such items as steam engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products, traction engines and ballbearings. Its importance in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a target of bombing in WW2, and it was successfully hit on a few occasions.

The railway line came to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence for the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done approximately forty five years earlier (1797), when it connected the town with the Blackwater estuary, letting ships to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.
